Ruben- stein has been a controver- sial figure on the American Jewish scene for a decade, because of his views about "the death of God" and his subsequent battles with American Jewish establish- ment. In his latest book, "Power Struggle," published by Charles Scribner's Sons, Ru- benstein presents an autobi- ography of his internal tur- moils which led him first to Unitarianism, and then to seek the power of "the priest's magic" in Reform Judaism, then Conservative, then Orthodok and ultimate- ly away from serving a con- gregation at all. YOUR FURNITURE DESERVES Waldorf, Md. Any autobiography can be challenged as a one-sided perspective, a n d , Ruben- stein's is even more danger- ous because of the contro- versial nature of his pre- vious books on the death of God and Christianity. One has difficulty in respecting his views when weighed against the emotional imbal- ance that permeates "Power Sfruggle." His emotional traumas ul- timately dissolved his first marriage, after leading him from one seminary to the next until his increasing or- thodoxy and lack of time made him settle on the con- servative rabbinate, although more Orthodox. r ....• =1111 • •• LETTER BOX (Editor's Note: The writer of this letter is among the noted authorities on the Mid, dle East. Editor, The Jewish News, Yassir Arafat's appearance in New York has led to an attempt by Arab apologists to equate the anarchial ac- tivities of the Palestine Liber- ation Organization with Jew- ish terrorism in the days be- fort Israel gained indepen- dence. But there are the following fundamental differ- ences: - Hagana, the recognized un- derground force of the Jew- ish population of Palegtine, instructed its men to do everything possible to avoid any loss of life as they sabo- taged bridges, power lines and other installations of the British mandatory .govern ment. Such terrorism as the assas- sination of Count Bernadotte and Lord Moyne, the dyna miting of one wing of the King David Hotel and the killing of civilians at Deir Yassin was the work of either the Irgun or the Stern Group and was denounced by the 'Jewish Agency; -the officially recognized representative of the Jewish people of Pales- tine, and by all responsible Jewish leaders of the time. For example, the day after the Deir Yassin tragedy, the Jewish Agency issued an of- ficial statement expressing the "horror and disgust" felt by the Zionist leadership, and called the attack "irrespon- sible, ill-conceived and frank- ly brutal." The next day the Jewish Agency, which upon inth, pendence a month later became the government of Is- rael, reported the statement in a telegram to King Abdul- lah of Transjordan. On that day the two chief rabbis of Palestine issued a statement expressing the same senti- ments. This is in striking contrast to the reaction of Arab na- tions and Arab leaders to such .PLO atrocities as the shooting up of Lod airport, -the murder of Israeli ath- letes at the Olympic games and the tragedies' of Ma'alot and Kiryat Shemona.
