cording to report in the
"Council Wom•n," the quar-
terly publication of the
NCJW. Yonina Langer of the
NCJW community activities
department said that the re-
plies constituted a represen-
tative sampling of the Coun-
cilette membership.
Seventy per cent of the
young women reported they
believed they should deter-
mine their own standards of
behavior, with 49 per cent
reporting they would con-
sider s mixed marriage a
threat to Jewish survival, 73
per cent reported their par-
ents opposed such marriages
and 52 per cent said they
would be influenced by their
parents' views.
Similarly, 60 per cent of
the teen-agers reported that
their views on marriage were
similar to those of their par-
ents but 67 per cent said
they thought their married
lifestyles would be different.
A large number of replies
reflected a desire to work,
not to be "an average house-
wife" and not to have chil-
dren "too soon." The report
said 86 per cent of the teen-
agers supported ratification
of The Equal Rights Amend-
ment.
Only 2 per cent of the girls
said "no" to a question on
whether, in most situations,
they felt "comfortable being
Jewish" and 61 per cent said
they had a strong sense of
Jewish identity and that they
felt their ideas of being Jew-
ish were similar to that of
their parents.
The report said 57 per cent
reported they discuss with
their families issues of being
Jewish -and that Israel has a
large part in their concern
for Jewish survival.
