Federico Fellini is a irector that I admire above 11 others."-Gene Shalit. NBC-TV Today Show "'Amarcord' is the most beautiful movie Fellini has ever made and a landmark in the history of film. It is a sprawling, hilarious, touching, evocation of life.", —Paul 0. Zimmerman, Newsweek "What a triumph! Fellini's new 'Amarcord' is even more beautiful than '8'/i'. It is a wonderstruck, affectionate work. One wants to shake someone by both his hands and say 'well done'." —Penelope Gillian, The New Yorker "Federico Fellini makes movies the way Picasso painted pictures. 'Amarcord' is an unforgettable dream machine, a masterwork, a cornucopia abrim with things to amaze and gratify any moviegoer still capable of responding to priceless sonnets." —Bruce Williamson, Playboy is pure pleasure. One of the rare films you can let caress you with the sheer sensuousness of loving art. Fellini restores magic to movies."-Joseph Gelnus, Newsday "`Amarcord' ity in all the socialist coun- tries. The chairman of the Jew- ish community, Geza Seifert, is said to have excellent re- lations with the Hungarian government. Seifert has been president of the Jewish com- munity for 20 years. A recent article in the community weekly, New Life, describes Seifert as "a fine guardian of old Jewish tra- ditions and at the same time one who is working hard to assure good relations with the state." This relationship between the Jewish community and the Hungarian government was clearly stated 25 years ago, following the atrocities of the war. At that time, the Hungar- ian government issued a dec- laration guaranteeing equal rights and liberties for the Jewish people — the first time in Hungarian history that such a declaration was so clearly and firmly enunci- ated. There are other examples of the growing health of the Hungarian Jewish dommun- ity. Budapest has a rabbini- cal school — the only one in the Eastern European coun- tries. Students come from Czechoslovakia, from East Germany, and even from the Soviet Union to study there. Before the war, there was a Goldmark Hall in Buda- pest, named after a poor Jewish cantor, Karl Gold- mark, who later became a composer. During the war, the Nazis tore down the hall. But this year, a new music hall was inaugurated in his honor. There are, of course, still many problems in Hungary for Jewish people — despite the government declaration. Hungarians of Jewish descent still form a tiny minority of government and party lead- ership. Anti-Semitism is not dead — it exists in Hungary as elsewhere. But Hungarian Jews, putting the past behind them, are working to create a new and vital community.
