'Between You
. . . and Me

Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, JTA
(Copyright 1974, JTA Inc.)
UN REFLECTIONS: From the heavly guarded prem-
ises of the United Nations I watched the huge rally of
more than 175,000 JeArs and non-Jews in New York pro-
test the recognition given by the United Nations General
Assembly to the "liberation movement" ,of the Arab 'terror-
ises. It was an historic scene long to, be remembered, the
largest peaceful political demonstration ever seen in New

Y

o individual participant in this mass protest could
e the colossal dimension of the rally. Squeezed be-
others, none of the participants Could - see the overall
ssive picture of the rally. One only saw the crowd
as far as his eye could reach, but not the sea of people
that crowded the nearby streets leading to the UN Plaza.
Hundreds of buses with school children arrived from
all parts of the,. city. Special buses from other cities lined
up the side streets bringing thousands of demonstrators.
The crowds spilled over from the UN Plaza blocks
and blocks away. A large part of them could not even
get a glimpse at the speakers, and they had to listen to
the addresses through powerful loud speakers. Large
police units were on the alert in an area of 10 blocks around
the UN Plaza.
- However, the demonstration passed peacefully. Young
American Arabs mixed with the crowds openly carrying
anti-Israel placards, but were ignored with disgust by the
protesters.
WHAT NOW? Inside the United Nations building,
officials watched the demonstration from a distance. In-
evitably the question "what is next in the Arab-Israel
conflict?" was the topic of private talks among them.
The prevailing opinion in UN circles is that none of
the big powers-not even the Soviet Union-wants the
disappearance of the state of Israel. Although the Arabs
now have the upper ,hand in the United Nations, there
is no fear that they may succeed in any attempt to seek
the expulsion of Israel from the United Nations. Israel is
the creation of the United Nations and a member state
of this world organization. Its elimination from the, UN
would be a great blow to the entire UN system.
There is, however, fear that renewed war may break
out between the Arab countries and Israel. Preparations
to this effect are being made now by the Arabs. The
question in the minds of some UN delegates is how to
prevent such a war. It is clear war will bring catastrophic
results. Syria is already quietly moving some of its im-
portant offices froin Damascus into the interior of the
country. This is taken as an indication that Syria is
preparing this time to attack Israeli centers behind the
front line by long-range missiles and is anticipating Is-
rael's retaliation in the same manner.
There is little doubt that the United States will, if
war breaks out, come to the aid of • Israel. But the
nature of the war may be such that the aid may come
too late. It may be a "Blitz . War" effected even quicker
than the Yom Kippur War. Only if the U.S. sends proper
aid to Israel before the anticipated war breaks out, can
attacks on Israel be prevented. This is the opinion one
hears among neutral delegates in the United Nations.-

UN Blasted by Canadian Jews

TORONTO (JTA)-Cana-
dian Jewish leaders said here
that they were "deeply dis-
appointed" with the results
of their audience with For-
eign Minister Allan Mac-
Eachan in Ottawa last week
-hen they protested Canada's
:lure to vote against the
JN General Assembly's reso-
lution inviting the Palestine
Liberation Organization to
participate in its debate on
the Palestine issue.
,anada abstained in the
eral Assembly and it ab-
stained earlier when the In-
ternational Civil Aviation
Organization (ICAO) voted in
Montreal last month to admit
PLO representatives to ICAO
deliberations as observers.
The presidents of the Cana:
dian Jewish Congress, the
• Canadian Zionist Federation
and the Bnai Brith of Canada
were received for 90 minutes
by MacEachan after having
sought an audience with him
since last August "We re-
ceived a polite and attentive
hearing but we accomplished
nothing," CZF -, president
Philip Givens told Jewish

journalists here.
He said the foreign minis-
ter's attitude was that Can-
ada had not changed its posi-
tion .with respect to the •id-
dle East auk, was not pre-
pared to pre-judge the PLO
issue. "I told the minister
that our people were Mat and
dismayed by the govern-
ment's attitude," said Givens,
a former mayor of Toronto
and a Liberal MP in the
Ontario parliament, the same
party as MacEachan.
He described the invitation
to the PLO as "striking a
tinder box which may lead
to the third world war,"
Boris Moroz, president of
Bnai Brith District 22, who
also attended the meeting
with MacEachan, said the
minister told the Jewish
leaders- that Canada would
continue to abstain on these
issues.
Sydney M. Harris, presi-
dent of CJC, said MacEachan
did not indicate that he un-
derstood the basic issue in-
volved in inviting the PLO
to 'address t h e General
Assembly.
