from the audience.
A review of "The Spell Of
Time" (Praeger, Inc.), by
Gunter Lawrence of New
York is presented here:
Those who classify Meyer
Levin as an author of weighty
realistic novels such as "The
Settlers," "Compulsion" and
`The Old Bunch" are in for a
delightful surprise, for "The
Spell Of Time" is highly im-
aginative, romantic, and brief

—a many-faceted novella.
Presented as "a tale of
lOve in Jerusalem," it is
rooted in the mystical lore of
Hassidism, but with a daring
leap, Levin-links his mystic
tale to contemporary science
fiction. And amazingly; the
synthesis holds.
Levin's theme is • drawn
from a belief expounded by
the founder of Hassidism,
Rabbi Israel, the Baal Shem
Tov .(The Master of the Sa-,
cred Name). The physical' or-
der of the universe, said the,
sage, may be altered only for
the sake of fulfilling a pre-
destined love.
To the question of fate, Le-
vin adds an intriguing puzzle
of recognition, for through an
ingenuous tale of an exchange
of souls, he leaves one won-
dering whether a woman rec-
ognizes and follows her love,
even when he is in another
body.
A young French woman,
Felicite, comes to the He-,
brew University in jerusa:
lem just after World War II,
for graduate work in bio-
chemistry with Dr. Uriel
Buchhalter, a German Jewish
refugee of Nobel Prize sta-
ture. Falling in love with the
gentle, Middle-age& widower,
she is nevertheless strongly
attracted to Joe Schwartz, a
self-centered - young Ameri-
can student.
Experimenting with what
seems to bee a mind-releasing
plant, found among Bedouin
users, Schwartz and Buch-
halter decide to try a test on
themselves. Deeply interest-
ed in mysticism, Buohhalter
wonders whether their enti-
ties, or souls, if released by
the drug. can be exchaneed.
For this, they go to a Has-
sidic wonder-rabbi in the Old
City. The sage repeats the
saying of the Baal Shem Tov
about altering the order of
the universe only for the ,ful-
fillment of love. This, they-
assert, is the case.
"The Spell Of Time" glows
with the atmosphere of Je-
rusalem itself, new and old.
Indeed with its theme of re-
newal, of age and youth, the
story could be a parable of
the ancient city reborn, but
the author does not stress
this
"The Spell Of Time" holds
one spellbound. And, the no-
vella is most attractively pre-
sented, with atmospheric
draWings of the Old City by
Eli Levin, the author's son.
