Sapir Has Busy Detroit Schedule
Pinhas Sapir, chairman of
the World Zionist Organiza-
tion and Jewish Agency ex-
ecuthies, will be the guest
speaker 8:15 p.m. Mdnday,
at an open 'public meeting
at Cong. Beth Achim.
Sapir is making a U.S. tour
to encourage aliya.
His schedule Monday in-
eludes a noon luncheon for
Detroit's Jewish leaders and
professionals arranged by the
Jewish Community Council.
He will meet with Jewish
faculty and students 2 p.m.
at the Grossberg Religious
Center, Wayne State Univer-
sity, under the sponsorship
of Bnai Brith Hillel Founda-
tion and the Conference of
Jewish Faculty. At 5:30 p.m.,
at Cong. Beth Achim, Sapir
will' meet with represent-
atives of U S Y, Habonim,
Hashomer Hatzair, Bnei Aki-
va, Hashachar, and BBYO.
The 8:15 p.m. program
sponsored by the Detroit
Zionist Federation will fea-
ture amemorial - -for 'David
Ben-Gurion and a panel of
Detroit Jewish leaders who
will question Sapir on mat-
ters of Jewish and Israeli
interest. After this program
the Jewish Young Adult As-
sociation will meet with him.
Sagir's visit to Detroit was
arranged by the Israel
Aliya 'Center of Michigan,
Sapir told a New 'York
meeting last week that Is-
rael's goal was a 4-5-fold
increase in aliya from the
United States. He said the
average emigration at pres-
ent from this country was
about 2,000 families a year.
His aim, he said, is to reach
a yearly aliya from the U.S.
of 8-10,000 families.
He described his current
visit to the U.S. as "a spe-
cial mission to create an
atmosphere of aliya."
Sapir said that all efforts
will be made so that• . new-
comers from the U.S. would
no longer be subjected to
excessive bureaucracy. -
He also voiced his opinion
that .aliya promotion be han :
died in the U.S. by local
Jewish organizations, with
Israeli schlichim (emissar-
ies), serving as advisors.
In addition, Sapir said that
special considerations will be
given to aliya groups Who
will come to settle, as did
the Hasidic groups, on spe-

tion will be given to the
social absorption by Israelis,
forming voluntary g r o u p s
which would adopt and help
newcomers to become inte-
grated into the Israeli so-
ciety.
Sapir said that despite the
severe economic and politi-
cal problems confronting
Israel, the country was cap-
able of absorbing newcomers
in large numbers.
"I am not a dreamer," he
said, acknowledging that
many--problems remained to
be solved. But- he said one
of the most urgentof them,
"the problem of housing, is
solved." Sapir recalled that
in the early years of Israel's
statehood, 1948.51, it a b -
sorbed hundreds of thou-
sands of immigrants with a
population of only 600,000.
Today, he said, Israel has
a population of 3,000,000
and is in a much better posi-
tion- to absorb newcomers
than in the early years.
Questioned about Israelis
who have left their country
to settle elsewhere, Sapir es-
timated their number at no
more than 200,000 since the
creation of the state. Israel
