4 Israel'Will Win If New War' Erupt's' WASHINGTON (ZINS) — U.S. military experts, speak- ing at a conference at Bran- deis University, said that in the event of a new Mideast war Israel would emerge the victor( with casualties less than she sustained in the last war. According to these author- 1 ities, Israel now has a stand- ing army of 100,000' soldiers with 2,000 tanks, opposed to a force of 300,000 men and 6,000 tanks in Egypt, Syria and other-Arab states. That prediction is sup- - -ported by British military experts, who contend, how- ever, that Israeli casualties will be much higher than in the previous war. creative Party Planning The British said they be- including lieve that despite Israel's Candy Centerpieces expected military victories, a large number of civilian casualties will occur as a Personalized Party result of the emplijythent by Favors Syria and Egypt of Soviet- Invitationi and Party. made long-range ground-to- Accessories .for all occasions ground "Scud" missiles. Blacks, Jews Meet in Chicago' to 'Re-Form Liberal Coalition CHICAGO (JTA) — Black and Jewish religious leaders from across the nation con- vened a two-day conference Monday to re-establish their once powerful civil rights coalition and develop a work- ing body to eliminate the common social concerns fac- ing the nation. The meeting, convened by Reverend Jesse Jackson, "Operation Push" and Rabbi Irwin M. Blank, president of the Synagogue Council of America, national umbrella organization f o r Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Judaism, brought_ together 50 clergymen and laymen from 10 cities. In opening statements, Rev.- Jackson and Rabbi Blank expressed a sense of urgency that both groups have in reuniting to work together. While they agreed that there may be some is- sues which could still divide both blacks and Jews, they called for "honest and frank exchanges" and hoped that any areas of disagreement would result not in "re- courses of either racism or anti-Semitism." Rev. Jackson, a leader in the civil rights movement, called the conference "more compelling than the civiliza- tional crisis itself, in which the U.S. is now engulfed. "An economy that is stag- nant and unstable, the epi- demic of corruption in the political life of this society, the moral and spiritual decay that we witness all - around- us, is putting our respective ministries to the test. - "The challenge to feed the hungry, find socially useful work for the jobless, care for the aged senior citizens of our country, provide qual- ity education for every child, reduce inflation by reducing the military budget which is the prime source of inflation and re-ordering the priorities of our country to serve the needs of the people — these are the common grounds for cooperation between the Visit The 2nd Award VI/inning JIM VENIRES 14-Friday, Noy. 15, 1974 'THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS • black and Jewish commun- ities." Rabbi Blank stressed that both groups must overcome Their tendency to see each other as symbols rather than as living beings. "As long as - black people see Jews as the symbol of white oppres- sion, t h e super-employer discriminator, then it will be that much more difficult to deal with those sources. As long as Jews persist in seeing black people as the symbol of threats to eco- nomic security, community stability and Third World hostility to Israel, then con- structive approaches to its concerns will be stifled be- fore they can take shape. Seeing each other as symbols rather than as living indi- viduals and vital commun- ities prevents any real meet: ing." Rabbi Blank stressed the need for blacks to under- stand the passion Jews have for Israel. "It is _a source of puzzlement, which ferquently shades into anger for Jews when black movements with legitimate concerns and rea- sons for anger and hostility take the occasion, it seems to . us gratutiously, to malign- Israel' and thereby insult the Jewish people. "We- wonder at this and take it_ as an expression of anti-Semitism. Positive state- ments of support, positive _ gestures — of course we would like this. But, in our more reasoned moments, we know that this may not be possible„ or even necessary, other than as an expression of compassionate- f e 1 w - feeling." After the , opening state- ment, the clergymen went behind closed doors for meet- ings for the continuation of • the conference. • If you're on your way to the land of milk and honey, it couldn't hur to stop off in Germany for a beer.
