Now that all the results
are in on the recently com-
pleted Asian Games, a retro-
spective view would indicate
the games were more of a
farce than a sports event. It
would be, funny, were it not
so serious so far as Israel's
future sports programming
is concerned.
Events which transpired
were so ludicrous that had
they taken place in an Olpm-
pits, the host country involv-
ed would have been placed
in a humiliating position. In
Asia, however,. Iran, site of
the games, was pitied rather
than condemned because it
had no control over the turn
of affairs.
China gave its solemn worts
to participate in all events
and then immediately joined
Pakistan and Kuwait in boy-
cotting Israel in contact
sports. The Chinese, how-
ever, appeared at times
against the Israelis in non-
contact events, unlike the
other four boycotting coun-
tries which refused any corn-

petition. In some cases, as
when two Chinese women
fencers • declined Matches,
the girls were disqualified.
In women's tennis, a Chinese
;girl handed victory to her
Israeli opponent and then
continued in the competition.
Pakistan sprang a surprise
in the seventh day of com-
petition when their basket-
ball team refused to play
against the Israelis, forefeit-
ing the game 2-0. A team
member declared, "We will
not play with Israel. We are
boycotting Israel. Our gov-
ernment does not agree to
play with Israel."
On the other hand,\ Paki-
stani Chef-De-Mission Malek
Miriat Khaled said he had
not known of the decision and
suspected the players made
the decision on their own.
Shmuel Lalkin, the Israeli
Chef-De-Mission, expressed
astonishment in view of the
fact that this refusal Came
from the host of the 1978
Asian Games.
"Their players have al-

ready competed with us in
tennis and our athletes are
on completely friendly terms
with Pakistanis. It is an in-
sulting attitude from a host
country. It probably did not
come from the athletes them-
selves," he stated.
The Pakistanis apparently
are hoping that by 1978 the
Arabs and Israelis will have
arrived at some sort of set-
tlement. It would then be-
come easier to invite the Is-
raelis to the Pakistan Games,
though special security ar-
rangements will have to be
made for them.
Khaled explained, "Even if
there is no final Arab peace
settlement by then, .we will
have to find some way to
invite them. If there is an-
other Arab-Israeli war before
the games, however, then it
is obvious we cannot invite
them. InIsuch a case the se-
curity problem would be too
difficult to handle, as public
feeling, both among sporting
and general public, would be
extremely high."

West Bank.
The incident was first re-

Rabin last week at a meet-

informed, apparently to avoid
further controversy over the
settlement issue.
The four reservists were

They had been ordered on
the last day of Sukkot holi-

to keep would-be settlers

But the men refused to

against settlers. As a result
they were arrested, held in

Union Leader Wants
Arab Oil Boycott

NEW YORK (JTA). — A
trade union leader says the
United States "should im-
pose an absolute ban on the
import of any Arab oil what-
soever, and take whatever
domestic steps are necessary
to make up the shortage."
This view was expressed
by Lane Kirkland, AFL-CIO
secretary-treasurer in an ad-
dress to the 51st annual con-
vention of the National Com-,,
mittee for Labor Israel.
The labor leader declared
that it is "better to have an
oil shortage than a moral,
shortage."
