By Rabbi Samuel J: Fox

(Copyright 1974, JTA, Inc.)

The Sabbath is ushered in
earlier than sunset on Friday
night and taken leave of later
than. on • Saturday
night.
Some authorities (e.g.',
Mechiltle Jethro) claim that
the verses in the Bible infer
this practice. The verse in
the Bible which reads "Re-
member the Sabbath" infers
having the Sabbath in mind
while it is not yet Sabbath.
The verse which reads "Keep
the Sabbath" implies watch-
ing and holding on to the
Sabbath as it leaves. Others
claim that it is imposSible
for the human being to know
the exact moment of sunset.
Thus, in order not to make
the mistake of violating the
Sabbath on sunset one should
observe the Sabbath before
sunset on Friday and after
sunset on Saturday. Still
others claini that the addi-
tional time both at the begin-
ning and at the end of the
Sabbath demonstrate our
love for the holiness of the
Sabbath. The coming of a
desirable visitor is antici-
pated even before he arrives
just as his departure is de-
layed by his host who wants
to spend as much time with
him as possible. Mystic au-
thorities in the Ka•baleh in-
dicate that 'the dead are
given a respite from their
ordeals on the Sabbath. Their
respite lasts as long as the
living observe the Sabbath.
The longer the living observe
the Sabbath the better it is
for the dead.

.Warsaw Ghetto
SS Charged

BONN (JTA) — The Ham-
burg public prosecutor has
raised charges of murder of
Jews and Poles in the War-
saw ghetto against former
SS officers Hans Baecker,
61, and Helmuth Orf, 58.
The two men, who are ap-
pearing in court in the same
trial as former SS command
er in Warsaw Ludwig. Hahn,
66, are accused of selecting
Jews and Poles for deporta-
tion to concentration camps,
and for murdering their pris-
oners in Warsaw.
