NEW YORK — Three Israel commemorative stamp
sets were released this week the Israel Philatelic Agency
in America, reported. Two values honoring David 'Ben-
Gurion; two stamps commemorating the centenary of the
Universal Postal Union and three stamps- that are a con-
tinuation of the fifth definitive series featuring Israeli
landscapes.
The green and -brown David Ben-Gurion stamps are
a tribute to the great leader who announced to the world
the rebirth of the state of Israel in May, 1948.
No other personality in modern Jewish history made
such an impact on the people and the state of Israel. As
the leader of the Yishuv and the labor movement during
the struggle for liberty and free immigration, as the
voice which proclaimed the renaissance of Jewish in-
dependence after 20 centuries, as head of the first gov-
ernment, responsible for -the nation's political destines and
its security for almost 15 years—his short, tocky, white
maned figure towered over the state. .
Noo' other outstanding individual in the first 25
years of Israel's existence matte so great a con-
tribution to its development. No one succeeded in
providing greater leadership and keener challenges
than the man who passed away a year ago, after 87
years packed with action, 70 of 'which. he spent in
the country which he cherished with all the ardour
of his Zionist conviction.
The Universal Postal. Union (UPU) is commemorated
on - a new multicolored stamp from Israel on the
occasion of its- 100th anniversary. This interesting stamp
features a dove with a postman's hat carrying an envelope.
In the first half -of the 19th Century almost all nations
were operating well-functioning postal systems. But politi-
cal division in Europe hampered the rapid distribution of
letteri and parcels on an international level.
Upon initiative of the United States, an international
conference met in Paris in 1863; and although they were
able to put together the- groundwork for an international
postal system, the implementation was put Off.
Subsequently, through the efforts of Heinrich von
Stephan, the German POstal Services, an assembly met in
Berne, Switzerland in September 1974. The activities of
the UPU officially started in 1875, the number of member
states. increasing year after year.
Israel joined in 1949. The UPU is given credit for
putting an end to the confusion and disorder in the
international postal system.
Three new stamps depict aspects in the physical
make-up of the state' of Israel. The first stamp shows the
cliffs in the Arava. The Arava, extending from the south-
ernmost tip of. the Dead Sea to Eilat, is part of the great
Rift Valley. Cutting through walls of rock, this bleak,
semi-desert canyon, 165 kilometers long and up to 20
kilometers in width, separating Jordanian territory on the
east from that of Israel on the west. Israel has made- good
use of limited water resources in the Arava, utilizing them
for permanent settleinents and temporary camps.
The second stamp in the landscape group shows a
sailboat beached The third stamp pictures the
city of Safed, one of Israel's four holy cities. Situated in
Upper Galilee, on a hilltop nearly 900 meters above sea
level, it looks out upon a breathtaking vista stretching
from the Sea of Galilee to the snowy peak of Mt. Hermon.

LOS ANGELES' (JTA) —
Anti-Semitic propaganda is
being published in the Arab
states and distributed world-
wide on a. scale that com-
pares,, with the worst efforts
by the Nazis, according to a
report released by the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee.
The study, titled. "Political
and Religious Anti-Semitism:
%Weapon in the Arab-Israeli
Conflict," found that "there
are now more editions of the
notorious forgery 'The Pro-
tocols of the Elders of Zion'
published in Arabic than in
any other language."
The report was made pub-
lic at the closing session of
the four-day annual meeting
of the AJCommittee's Na-
tional Executive Council
Which ended -last week. It
noted that anti-Jewish propa-
ganda is currently being in-
troduced into Africa, Asia
and Latin America.
In 1968 the Islamic Insti-
tute in Beirut printed 200,000
copies of the "Protocols" in
French and 100,000 in Eng-
Hill for export. Editions in
other ,languages, in large
printings, have appeared
throughout the Western world
and excerpts have appeared
in textbooks for Arab school
children and in armed forces
indoctrination manuals,, the
report said.
It found "even more dis-
quieting" the "perversion of
religious thought to political
ends" in Mosier-xi\ countries.
"Although Islamic tradition
holds Judaism to be a reli-
gion of true revelation, and
the Bible ,a holy book for both
Jews and Christians, Moslem
scholars have recently mis-
represented and slandered
the Hebrew Scriptures and
attributed all manner of
crimes to the innate deprav-
ity of Jews and their reli-
gion," the report stated.
'A repOrt in a similar vein
from, the AlCommittee's
Europeat Office was made
public at a session of the
,,National Executive Council
meeting. It stated that blood
libel charges leveled against
Jews in medieval times still
are being commemorated in
several Western European
countries.
Legends alleging Jewish
"ritual murder" of Christian
children or profanation of
holy wafers supposed to have
bled or produced miracles
continue to be propagated in
several Spanish cities and

be given to Hornstein for es-
tablishing the -"Aish Dos
Hornstein. Fellowship Pro-.
gram which is‘geared to in-
crease the number of experi-
enced Hebrew Day' School
principals and ,teachers.
