WSU Press Chief, Bernard Goldman,
to Address Jewish Book Fair Session

Author Chaim Grade left
his heart in Vilna, even
though he lost some of his
family and was subjected to
persecution there.
Grade, due to speak for
the 23rd annual Jewish Book
Fair 8 p.m. Nov. 11 at the
Jewish Center, said in a re-
cent New York Times inter-
view that he only speaks of
Vilna when asked and pre-
fers to speak of his writing.
The author of "The Agun-
ah," Grade still has a little
Bible that he took with him
when he fled Vilna in 1941.
During his flight he encoun-
tered some Russian soldiers,
who despite seeing the Bible
wanted to shoot him anyway.
However, a Soviet officer,
a Jew, saved his life. After
looking at the book, Grade
said the officer "asked me,
`Who are you?' and then got
very angry at the soldiers.
He handed the book back to
me very gently. When I left
them, I opened it, and it fell
open to Jeremiah 30:11."
The pas=sage fittingly
reads: "For I am with thee,
saith Jehovah, to save thee:
for I will make a full end
of all the nations whither I
have scattered thee, but I
will correct thee in measure
will in no wise leave
),Aee unpunished."
