U.S. and Canada High Holiday
Bond Appeals Net $40 Million
-
NEW YORK — Special ap-
peals conducted in syna-
gogues throughout the United
States and Canada during
Rosh Hashana and Yom
Kipptir have produced a total
of $40,000,000 in Israel Bonds,
the largest amount of Itonds
ever subscribed during a
High Holiday period since
the inception of the Bond
program.
Rabbi Leon Kronish, chair-
man of the national rabbinic
cabinet of the Israel Bond
Organization, said a record
number of more than 1,000
synagogues of all three
branches of Judaism partici-
pated in the appeals, held in
most synagogues during the
Yizkor service.
Emphasizing the key role
of the rabbis and lay leaders
of congregations, R b i
Kronish declared that their
record-breaking achievement
this year was due chiefly to
a concerted effort to enroll
a maximum number of in-
dividuals and families in
Shomrei Israel, the honor
society . of purchasers of
$1,000 br more in Bonds.
-A Torah mantle made in
Israel to memorialize Israel's
war dead was awarded to
those synagogues that ren-
dered outstanding participa-
tion in the High Holiday ap-
peals.
The High Holiday program
was conduCled u n d e r the
leadership of the national
zabbinic cabinet of the Israel
Bond Organization headed
by Rabbi Kronish and by his
three Co-chairmen: Rabbis
Balfour Brickner, Pesach Z.
Levovitz and David H.
Panitz.
The three rabbinic associ-
ations—the Rabbinical Coun T
cil of America, Rabbinical
Assembly and Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis
— actively supported t h e
Shomrei Israel Bond pro-
gram urging every member
family of every congregation
to subscribe to Israel Bonds
in an amount of not less than
$1,000 as "a demonstration of
solidarity a n d unswerving
support for the people of
Israel."

Man is like a tree. If you
stand in front of a tree and
watch it:. incessantly, to see
how it grows, and to see how
much it has grown, you will
see nothing at all. But tend
it at all times, prune the
runners and keep it free of
beetles and worms and—all
in good time—it will come
into its growth. It is the same
with man: all that is neces-
sary is for him to overcome
his obstacles, and he will
thrive and grow. But it is not
right to examine him hour
after hour to see how much
has already -been added to
his stature.•
He who tries to do more
than he is able, will in the
end do less.—Aknin
