"What makes the whole affair so disconcerting is the twisted • mind - and drugged conscience of the archbishop. He seems to consider the smuggling of 20,0 pounds of arms, ammunition and explo- sives . . . quite compatible with his episcopal office but protests against his incar- ceration as offending his rank," Msgr. • Oesterreicher said "The air surrounding the Capucci affair becomes even more turbid if one recalls the archbishop's 'd e f ens e' by Patriarch Maximos V" ac- cording to whom "it was not Capucci who joined a con- spiracy against Israel/' but "the Israeli authorities who plotted his arrest as part of their 'attempt to Judaize the city of Jerusalem and drive its people away by various terrorist methods," the state- ment continued. Msgr. Oesterreicher said that on the other hand, "We must . . . be deeply grateful to Archbishop Raya, till re- cently the shepherd of 40,000 Melkites in all of northern Israel, for having balanced the ledger, thus allowing Christians to hold their- heads high again. (North of Maple) QUIST TROY • 689-8000 • Lord Shinwell Honored at 90 LONDON—With the excep- tion of a two-year period early in his career, Emman-. uel Lord. Shinwell has been a member of the British Par- liament since 1922. The Jewish MP turned 90 in recent weeks, and his birth- day party was attended by British Prime Minister Har- old Wilson,. and 'four former prime ministers. According to the London Jewish Chronicle, Shinwell's record is remarkable. The son of a Polish immigrant, he entered the House of Com- mons 52 years ago, and has held six cabinet posts with various governments. He was the first Jew elect, ed as a Labor MP, and was described as one of "the wild men of the Clyde" represent- ing Scottish workers who be- lieved. in socialism. For many years, the Chron- icle reported, he remained aloof from the Jewish com- munity. He explained that this was because he repre- sented a mining district with little contact with Jewish or- ganizations. ._ He admits he had few dealings with issues of Je-W- ish concern during his long Parliamentary career, but did speak out against Hitler in 1933, and amazed followers during last year's Yom Kip- pur War when he urged young Jewish MPs to "have the courage of their convic- tions." Although never associated. with Jewish or Zionist organ- izations, Shinwell proudly af- firmed his Jewish origins. In 1938, after a member of the House of Commons made an anti-Semitic threat, Shinwell crossed the floor and struck the man. In 1948, when Britain sur- rendered the Palestine man- date and withdrew her forces, Minister for War Shinweli took measures to insure that Jews would not be discrimin- ated againit in disposal of military hardware. In later years he enthusias- tically supported Israel. - Golda Meir remarked how deeply moved she was at a recent conference of the So- cialist International, when she saw Shinwell leading the "Solidarity with Israel" march in her honor. Shinwell was honored at the recent opening of Parlia- ment with the request that he introduce the Queen's speech, an invitation usually extend- ed to younger ,politicians on the Way p up. He said he was uncertain if he would accept the honor: "They say the speech has to be uncontroversial," he said, "and I don't know if I can manage that."
