THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
THIS IS WHY WE SUPPORT
Shortage of Judaica
Scholars Reported _
-WALTHAM, Mass. (JTA)—
The Association for Jewish
Studies has reported that the
question of determining the
academic qualifications of
scholars for Jewish studies
in American colleges and uni-
versities had "become criti-
cal in the past year since we
do not have the trained aca,
demic personnel to-fill all the
positions which have been
created."
The- problem was outlined
in an editorial in the June
AJS Newsletter, which de-
clared that, based on the flow
of mail passing through its
office during the past year,
"the leading question facing
the association and the entire
field of Jewish studies in this
country" was "Who—or what
—is a Judaica scholar?"
The editorial said that dur-
ing the past 15 years, the
numbef of scholars active in
the field both in Israel and
North America "has in-
creased dramatically. Gone
are the days of the select
few." To solve many specific
questions, the AJS said its
committee on Consultation
and Placement had re-de-
signed questionnaires filled
out both by candidates and
universities "so as to elicit
more specifiC information as
to requirements and qualifi-
cations."
More Jewish Youth
on Military Bases
NEW YORK (JTA) — The
National J e wish Welfare
Board has reported that an
increasing number of Jewish
children are growing up on
U. S. military installations
whose Jewish religious edu-
cation is 'being aided by the
JWB commission on Jewish
chaplaincy.
The increase stems from
the fact that the majority of
Jews now serving in the
armed forces are married
and have their families with
them. To help meet the edu-
cational needs of such chil-
dren, the commission, in co-
operation with the Armed
Forces Chaplains Board, has
published a new edition of the
"United Jewish Religious
Education Curriculum for the
Armed Forces."
It contains an expanded
list of Jewish- educational re-
sources designed to help
Jewish chaplains, Jewish mil-
itary lay leaders, teachers
and others in Jewish religious
training in the various
branches of the military es-
tablishment.
