NEW YORK (JTA)—A syn-
agogue advisory council has
been established to aid the
joint United Jewish Appeal-
Federation of Jewish Philan-
thropies campaign by pro-
moting and intensifying par-
ticipation b y metropolitan
area synagogues and their
memberships in the world's
largest single fund-raising ef-
fort by a local Jewish com-
munity.
Lawrence B. Buttenwieser,
campaign chairman, an-
nounced that Rabbi Judah
'Cahn, spiritual leader Of Man-
hattan's Metropolitan Syna-
gogue and vice president of
the New York Board of Rab-
bis, has been named chair-
man of the new council. The
council's membership-, now
being recruited, will be
drawn from the . volunteer
leaderships - of both UJA and
federation and will include
both spiritual. and lay lead-
ers. Rabbi Isaac N. Trainin,
adviser on reigious affairs
and director of federation's
commission on synagogue re-
lations, will be director of the
council.

NEW YORK—The Ameri-
can Association for Jewish
Education- will conduct a
comprehensive study of ele-
mentary, secondary and adult
Jewish education in Roches-
ter, N. Y. announced Eliot
Bernstein, chairman of the
AAJE's national commission
on community services.
The study will have the co-
operation of the Bureau of
Jewish Education, central co-
ordinating agency for–Roch-
ester's Jewish day' school,
community high school and
10 congregational schools. It
is the first community-wide
survey of Jewish education
in the area since 1955.
