Congressman Says Americans May Foot Nazi Reparations Bill

Arab Soldiers Fail If Plans Disrupted

WASHINGTON (JTA) A
Congressman charged that
U.S. taxpayers would should-
er the burden of reparations
that East Germany may pay
to Jewish victims of Nazism.
Rep. John -R. Rarick (D.
La.) made the charge in a
speech Oct. 15 attacking
U.S.-East German diploma-
tic relations which he
claimed are "tied to consid-
eration of Jewish reparations
against East Germany by
Nazi victims."
Rarick, an arch-conserva-
tive, was defeated in last
month's primaries in his hid
for re-election to Congress.
He said that he had heard
from "at least one source"
that Jewish claims against
East Germany total nearly
$400,000,000 and that "mater-
ial claims for property con-
fiscation by the Nazis are
estimated as high as $4 bil-
lion."
The Congressman claimed
that this money would even-
tually come from the pock-
ets of American taxpayers.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Two
Israeli sergeants are facing
court martial for allegedly
refusing to assist their fellow
soldiers in the defense of an
Israeli position in the south-
ern section of the Suez Canal
zone that held out for three
days before it was captured
by Egyptian forces in the
opening days . of the Yom
Kippur War.
Both men were subsequent-
ly taken prisoner by the
Egyptians and one of them
was wounded by Egyptian
soldiers who fired at the sur-

rendering Israelis.
Six of the 24 defenders of
the position were killed and
the rest were captured. Ac-
cording to the charges against
the sergeants, both of them
mechanics, they refused to
perform non-combat duties
such as carrying and distrib-
uting ammunition, relieving
tired lookouts and standing
guard in shifts.
They are charged with per-
sisting in this conduct during
the first two days of the
Egyptian assault. They began
to perform their duties only

on the third day. The two
soldiers are accused of refus-
ing to carry out orders and
shameful conduct under fir.

Rabin Ducks Reform Question

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Pre-
mier Yitzhak Rabin addressed
the opening of the semi-an-
nual board of trustees study
mission of the Union of
American Hebrew Congrega-
tions, but pointedly refused
to react to the introductory
remarks by UAHC president
Rabbi Alexander M. Schind-
ler, who spoke bitterly of the
second class status imposed
on Reform rabbis in Israel
where all religious matters
are under the exclusive con-
trol of the Orthodox estab-
lishment.
The premier, who is com-
pleting delicate negotiations
aimed at getting the National
Religious Party to join his
coalition government, said he

Israeli Workers
to Receive Cost
of Living Raise

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israeli wage-earners will re-
ceive a cost of living allow-
ance in January amounting
to 30 per cent of their base
pay, according to figures re-
leased by the Central Bureau
of Statistics. Cost of living
allowances are tax free.
The figures showed a two-
per cent consumer price rise
for the month of September.
The January-September fig-
ures show a 26.5 percent
price increase and the in-
crease for the 12-month
period since the Yom Kip-
pur War amounts to nearly
38 percent.
Meanwhile, treasury offi-
cials flatly denied a report
in the financial newspaper,
Mabat, that the govern-
ment was considering la 50
per cent devaluation of the
Israeli pound.

Kissinger Unpopular

TEL AVIV (ZINS)
popularity of U.S. Secretary
of State Henry A. Kissinger
has plummeted among Is-
raelis since the Yom Kippur
War. A survey showed that
40.4 per cent of Israel's adult
population is dissatisfied with
Kissinger today, compared
with 16.6 per cent in January
when he helped arrange a
military disengagement
agreement between Israel
and Egypt.
