bered 296,945 individuals of
whom 276,025 or 93 per cent
also reported Jewishness as
their religious denomina-
tion, according to a Canadian
Jewish Congress summary of
data from the census.
The 20,920 Jews, about
seven per cent, who did not
list themselves as Jews by
religion, included those who
reported their ethnicity as
Jewish and their religious
denomination as Anglican —
1,705; United Church-2,075;
Catholic-3,340; and "no re-
ligion"-9,755. The remain-
ing 4,045 Jews by ethnicity
were classified among other
religious groups; according
to the CJC analysis.
Until 1941, the CJC re-
ported, figures on Canadian
Jews by ethnicity and religion
were virtually identical. In
the 1951 and 1961 censuses,
figures by religion were high-
er than those by ethnic
origin.
A total of 206,950 Jews,
almost 70 per cent, reported
English as their mother
tongue. Yiddish was listed as
the mother tongue of 49,175,
or 16.6 per cent. French was
the mother tongue of 11,215
Jews, about four per cent.

Film on Mohammed
May Be Scrapped
LOS ANGELES —
Actor
Anthony Quinn is planning to
film in Libya the life of the
prophet Mohammed, but the
grand mufti there thinks it
is a Zionist plot to smear the
prophet:
The mufti, Sheik Taha el
Zawy, warned in a speech on
the eve of a. recent Moslem
holiday, "Islam is in no need
of an American who is an in-
fidel to the teaching of Mo-
hammed and Islam to make
a film about it . . . I have
no doubt the producer of the
film is being pushed by
Zionism to harm the person
and conduct of the great
prophet."
Quinn, who would be pro-
ducer and star of the film,
is trying to get authorities in
Tripoli to help finance the
film. If they decide the
movie is derogatory, the pro-
duction will be denied.
HIAS Names
Rep. Holtzman
NEW YORK — Congress-
woman Elizabeth Holtzman,
(D.-Brooklyn), was honored
Monday as "woman of the
year" by the women's di-
vision of United HIAS Serv-
ice, the worldwide Jewish
migration agency, at its
seventh - annual conference.
The plaque Rep. Holtzman
received cites her "convic-
tion that individual human
rights are the cornerstone
of a free society," and
praises her as "an inspira-
tion to future generations of
Jewish women and all others
who revere justice."
Last May Rep. Holtzman
released a memoradum in
which she referred to the
investigation of more than
60 alleged Nazi war crim-
inals living in the United
States as "half-hearted" and
"dilatory." She claimed that
all available witnesses had
not been interviewed and all
foreign government and pri-
vate sources had not been
checked in the cases of al-
leged war criminals living
in this country.
In her freshman term Rep.
Holtzman sponsored legisla-
tion to curtail the abuse of
individual civil liberties, won
Medicare benefits for senior
citizens and negotiated for
federal funds to renovate her
congressional district.
The new HIAS woman of
the year served as a mem-
ber of the House Judiciary
Committee, which consid-
ered impeachment proceed-
ings and will shortly hold
hearings of confirmation of
a Vice President.
