Bar-Ilan Awards Ex-Canadian
Honorary Doctorate Degree

RAMAT - GAN, Israel —

Samuel Schechter Lunenfeld,
of Geneva, formerly of To-
ronto, has been honored with
the degree of doctor of phi-
losophy honoris causa by
Bar-Ilan University here on
the occasion of its 15th com-
mencement exercises.
The degree was awarded to
Lunenfeld "in recognition of
his many years of activities
on behalf of Israel and Jew-
ish causes which included
serving on the boards of
major Jewish organizations
in Canada, the United States
and Israel."
Phillip Stollman of Detroit,
chairman of Bar-Ilan's board
of trustees, said Lunenfeld
had combined the best of two
worlds—commerce and phi-
lanthropy. Now he was an
honorary doctor of Bar-Ilan
which also combined the best
of two worlds—that of 'secu-
lar knowledge and of the
great Jewish heritage.
With his son-in-law, Reuben
Kunin, Lunenfeld has made
substantial contributions to
Israel. These include univer-
sities, health and welfare
services, scientific institutes
and servicemen's organiza-
tions.
They have generously con-
tributed to Bar-Ilan, includ-
ing the Kunin-Lunenfeld Cen-
ter for Life Sciences, class-
rooms, facilities for profes-
sors and the Kunin-Lunenfeld
Student Residences. They re-
cently endowed three chairs
at the university — the Dr.
Yehoshua Mazur Chair in
Jewish and General Philo-
sophical Thought, a chair in
psychology of the retarded

ADL Seeks Aid
for Bulgarians

NEW YORK — The Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith expressed , alarm to
Secretary of State Henry
Kissinger over "what seems
to be a developing pattern of
harassment against Bulgar-
ian Jews."
Seymour Graubard, ADL's
national chairman, citing the
recent imprisonment of five
Bulgarian Jews on espionage
charges, wrote Kissinger that
"it is not clear whether Bul-
garia intends to allow" its
4,000 Jews "to emigrate free-
ly or if it is undertaking a
severe campaign of persecu-
tion and arrests."
Graubard urged the Un-
ited States. government "to
clarify the situation" and
seek the release of all "Jew-
ish political prisoners report-
edly now incarcerated in Bul-
garia."
