Moshe Bitan, director gen- eral of Paz, said in a radio interview that Israel, has managed to accumulate sig- nificant oil reserves, at con- siderable expense. Bitan noted that 40 per cent of Israel's present oil consumption comes from the Abu Rodeis fields in Sinai. If Israel were to be deprived of that source in a new war, the situation would be grave, he said. Polsky, who lost his job after applying for an exit visa to go to Israel, has been accused of injuring a. young woman struck by his car last March and could be sentenced to up to three years' imprisonment if con- victed. Jewish sources say the charges against Polsky were fabricated after the young 'woman threw herself in front of his car in a suicide at- tempt. Polsky's lawyer contends that prosecution. of Polsky is a maneuver to extricate the well-connected parents of the woman, Tamara A. Zhukov, from a potentially difficult legal situation. They could presumably be prosecuted under Soviet law for having incited a depend= ant person to attempt suicide, a crime that carries a penalty of up to five years in prison. The young woman's father, A. Y. Zhukov, is a promihent official in the Ministry of In- ternal Affairs. Her mother works for the Moscow city committee of the Communist party. Miss Zhukov, who was not seriously injured, is alaw student and also works for a district party committee in Moscow. According to the defense brief filed last May, Miss Zhukov admitted to Polsky, a doctor's ambulance assist- ant and several doctors that she had jumped in front of Poisky's 'car after having argued with her parents Ic * 7t lir W about one of her friends, Hospital records initially PRIME RIB 4- 1 attributed the injury to at- tempted suicide and Zhukov DINNERS told a hospital official that MON.& TUES. The scientists, including Voronel,. were all fired from their positions at academic and research institutions after applying for visas to emi- grate to Israel. They organiz- ed the weekly seminars to keep up with scientific de- velopments in their fields. The seminars were sharply denounced by Tass, the offi- cial Soviet news agency, as "anti-Soviet activities camou- flaged as science." Tass also warned Western scientists "caught in the mesh of Zion- ist propaganda" against lend- ing support to the seminars. Nine Jewish activists in Kiev sent separate messages to Soviet Premier Alexei K osy gin and Communist Party Secretary Leonid Brezhnev' protesting their de- nial of exit visas. The message to Brezhnev said, "We have applied to many and varied official de- partments on numerous oc- casions in an effort to achieve our desire to emigrate to our historical motherland, Israel. However, the Kiev authori- ties refuse to consider our desires or our rights, there- by ignoring the Soviet Con- stitution." The message charged that because they had applied for visas, the nine were dismis- sed from their jobs, had their telephones cut off, were fre- quently arrested and sub- j e c t e d to interrogation, threats and beating by police who have gone unpunished.
