Court Says Capucci Acted for Israeli Secret Service

Israel Counts 11,309 Dead From Wars

By GIL SEDAN
JERUSALEM (JTA)—The
trial of Archbishop Hillarion
Capucci took a bizarre turn
Tuesday when it was dis-
closed in a Jerusalem dis-
trict court that the Greek
Catholic prelate accused of
smuggling arms to terrorists
inside I s r a e l had acted
briefly as an Israeli intelli-
gence agent.
Presiding Judge Miriam
Ben-Porat made the disclo.
sure, based on earlier testi-
mony by a secret service
agent known as "Ibrahim."
Judge Ben-Porat said it
was clear from the testimony
that Capucci was released
following his first arrest Aug.
8 only after he had agreed to
work for the Israeli Secret
Service, Based on that fact,
the judge dismissed a claim
by Capucci's lawyer, Aziz
Shehade, that the cleric had
confessed under duress and
the threat of murder.
Capucci was re-arrested
Aug. 18. His lawyer claimed
that the archbishop believed
his second arrest was part of
the "spy game" he had been
playing and therefore entered
a second confession, the one
on which the prosecution is
basing its case.
Capucci admitted Aug. 18
he had met with two terrorist
agents in Beirut, known as
Abu Jihad and Abu Firas.
He said they gave him suit-
cases packed with weapons
which he knew were intended
for a terrorist organization
inside Israel.
Capucci confessed that he
followed their instructions

iod up to and including the

From the 1967 war to the
Yom Kippur War, 65() sold-
iers and 188 civilians died.
In the October war, 2,522 sol-
diers and 19 civilians were
killed. Since the October war,
63 soldiers and 53 civilians
have died.
According to the Associated
Press, Israeli officials esti-
mate almost 40,000 Arabs
were killed in the 1967 war
