U.S. Army Short of M-60 Tanks Sold to Israel The sale of 1,000 U.S. tanks to Israel last fall dur- ing the Yom Kippur War has depleted the supply of tanks available to the U.S. Army. According to the Detroit Free Press, Pentagon offi- cials are concerned that the Chrysler Corp. Detroit Tank Plant in Warren can not quickly replenish the M-60 medium tanks sold to Is- rael. A Pentagon spokesman said the situation is not "dan- gerous or threatening," but the Army is anxious to build up its tank reserve. Chrysler is having trouble increasing production due to a shortage of large castings needed to produce tank turrets and hulls. Many of the tanks sold to Israel were taken from reg- ular Army units in the U.S. and Europe, although some of the tanks were the older M-48 model.
