Avco-Enbassy's Levine Quits, Forms Independent Company

tures to re-enter independent'
film production and distri-
bution at age 69.

mixed emotions about leav-
ing the label of Embassy
Pictures behind, a trade
mark connected with him for
39 years, with a total of 491
pictures to his credit either
as distributor, producer or
both.
The career of Levine reads
like a Horatio Alger story.
Born in Boston, Levine was
working from the time he
was 14 running the gamut of
occupations from shining
shoes to managing a restau-
rant.
He was a Boston film dis-
tributor, and in 1959, Levine
acquired the epic "Hercules"
in Italy and spent $1,500,000
\ on promotion, saturating the
country. He grossed, jointly
with Warner Bros., more
than $9,000,000 on the inex-
pensively made film.

James McGuire, president of
the United States Soccer
Football Association, has
joined the growing list of
sports officials who are crit-
ical of the "recentaction tak-
en by the Asian Soccer -As-
sociation to ban Israel from
future participation in the
Asian Games.
McGuire, a former mem-
ber of the executive board of
the International Football As-
sociation (FIFA) has advised
the U.S. Committee Sports
for Israel, that he will do
everything in his power to
protest the action of the
Asian Football Association
and will correspond - with
members of FIFA concerning
his protest.
A resolution was passed
Sept. 15 in Teheran to- end
Israel's participation in, soc-
cer competition. The vote was
J7-13, with six abstentions,
less than the_two-thirds ma-
jority which the association's
rules require for the ouster
of a member.
