LONDON (JTA) — A re-
quest by a group of British
businessmen to set up an
Anglo-Arab Chamber of Com-
merce has remained without
response from the govern-
ment for several months.
' Arab embassies here are
reported annoyed about the
delay.
Mahmoud Riad, secretary
general of the Arab League,
visited London recently to
perform the opening cere-
mony, and was reported to
have left in an angry mood.
The department of trade
refuses to give any reasons
for the delay. An Anglo-
Israel Chamber of Commerce
has been operating here since
1948.

ON THE ALERT: Can the present raging inflation lead
to the resurrection of anti-Jewish groups which have lost
ground during the last go years? . . . Can the Ku Klux Klan
and other anti-Semitic elements begin to raise their ugly
heads again after being paralyzed during the years when
prosperity reigned in the United States?
This question is now very much on the minds of leaders
of Jewish organizations engaged in combatting anti-Jewish
tendencies in this country. It will be widely discussed at
the four-day National Executive Council meeting of the
American Jewish Committee which starts Oct. 24 in Los
Angeles.
It is an accepted theory that when economic tensions
begin to develop in , a country, the Jews there are the first
to suffer. All kinds of demagogic forces emerge seeking to
Classifieds Get Quick Results make the Jews a scapegoat. This was the case in prewar
Poland and Romania; this was the case in Germany where
inflation and unemployment brought Hitler to power; this
is beginning to be the case now in Italy and even in France
where anti-Jewish moods are emerging and where inflation
is • so much higher than in the United States.
The specter of increasing group tensions in this country,
as Americans compete for a share in the shrinking pie,
is putting American Jewish leadership on the alert. Soaring
inflation and rising unemployment are forcing curtailment
of social services and assistance to the needy. Everybody
knows that the quadrupling of prices of oil by the rulers of
the Arab oil countries has brought about the economic dis-
ruptions. But in an atmosphere of economic confusion it is
easy for anti-Semitic elements to play off one group of the
population against another and to incite especially against
the Jews, although the Jews suffer from the same economic
dislocations.

Semitic groups are already 'developing close contact with
the Arab rulers in anticipation of financial help from them
to intensify their propaganda activities. The Arab rulers,
becoming overnight multi-billionaires at the expense of the
United States and other democratic countries, are only too
eager to utilize the economic difficulties faced by this coun-
try for their campaign against Israel and the Jews.
Arab groups in this country have suddenly found new
funds enabling them for the first time to place full-page
advertisements—the cost of which runs into many thousands
of dollars — in American leading newspapers, blaming
"Zionism" for the spiraling fuel prices and economic diffi-
culties in this country. With this, they seek to diVert the
anger of Americans against the Arab potentates and direct
it toward the Jews and Israel.
Aiding in this effort are, quite subconsciously, also
Americans who traditionally consider themselves as lib-
erals. Spme Jewish leaders say that their "anti-Zionism"
is often barely distinguiShable from anti-Semitism. Many
thus accused are astounded and outraged by the charge,
but this does not diminish their activities which are branded
as "new anti-Semitism."
Instrumental in developing hostility toward Jews now
are also some segnients of the media which sows a growing
insensitivity to vulgarized and negative images of Jews.

CATHOLIC SENTIMENTS: Among the factors that assist
in developing anti-Jewish feeling in the present economic
turmoil is the cooling off of the CatholiC'ewish amity that
prevailed in the 1960s so strongly.
Catholic ecumenism is now losing its steam. Leaders
of the Catholic Church in this country accuse ,the Jews of
being unsympathetic to the needs of 50,000,000 Catholics.
They cite the fact that "elitist" Jews are strongly opposed
to government aid to parochial schools upon which the
Catholic school system depends now to a very great extent.
They also charge the Jews with supporting abortion legisla-
tion which the Catholic Church opposes.
The stand which the Pope is now taking with regard to
the status of Jerusalem is also having a negative effect on
Catholic-Jewish relations in this country. For a long time,
the Pope abstained from making public statements on the
future fate of Jerusalem. The -Pope plainly and strongly
insisted in his statement on the internationalization of Jeru-
salem. He also displayed coolness toward Israel on the Yom
Kippur War.
In the face of these trends, the American Jewish Com-
mittee leadership is now deterfnined to find some way, of
reassuring Catholic clerical and lay leaders - in this country
concerns. It also
that Jews are not indifferent to
plans to create new working alliances with blacks to deal
with economic and social .factors of common concern. It
will also seek ways to attempt promoting Jewish-Moslem
dialogues. And it is certainly determined to develop better
tools for assessing the character and potential of anti-
Jewish sentiment extant in the. Unied States.
