Karl Marx' Hatred of Jewish Faith Told in Former Detroiter's Volume

NEW YORK—Karl Marx's
antipathy for the • Christian
church, clergy, r it e s and
ideals was surpassed only by
his hatred of the Jewish
faith, according to his own
writings compiled by former
Detroiter Saul K. Padover in
"Karl Marx on Religion,"
the fifth volume in the Mc-
Graw-Hill Karl Marx Library
series.
According to Padover's
book, the prophet of atheism

was a descendant of rabbis,
some of them prominent
scholars, on both sides of his
family. Due to political cir-
cumstances, and to be al-
lowed to continue practicing
law, his father became a
Christian convert before Karl
was born — but his mother
remained a member of the

Jewish faith until one year
after six-year-old Karl had
been baptized.
Young Marx attended an
Evangelical elementary
school in Trier, a city that
was well over 90 per cent
Catholic, a fact which further
contributed to his religious
alienation.

As the author notes, "With
a Jewish mother (who prob-
ably did not attend syna-
gogue) and a Christian father
(who did not go to church),
Marx as a young boy could
obviously n e v e r be sure
whether he was a Jew or a
Christian."
At school, and later at the
university, young Marx ab-
sorbed t h e anti-Semitism
that was prevalent in much
of Europe. Christianity in-
spired his contempt as a
myth •created to lull the op-
pressed with illusions of sal-
vation — but he hated Juda-
ism.

Korff Asks Israel
for Nixon Support

JERUSALEM (JTA)
Rabbi Baruch Korff, head of
the American National Citi-
zens Committee for Fairness
to the Presidency, announced
that he was initiating a fund
to help finance former Presi-
dent Nixon's legal expenses.
In a press conference, Rab-
bi Korff expressed the hope
that the Israelis would sup-
port that fund, and mentioned
the support Nixon extended
to Israel during the Yom Kip-
pur War.

NEW YORK — Despite re-
ports of USSR willingness
to relax emigration restric-
tions on Soviet Jews in the
interest of detente, the Anti-
Defamation League reports
the Soviet Union has not re-
laxed an anti-Semitic propa-
ganda campaign. The ADL
says the USSR is doing this
to satisfy Arab allies and dis-
courage Jews from wanting
to go to Israel.
The charge is based on an
ADL one-year survey of Rus-
sian government - controlled
media — press, radio, and
publications.
The survey, according to
Seymour Graubard, the
ADL's national chairman, re-
vealed new emphasis on old
Soviet anti-Semitic themes
and "a different tack . . . the
denigration of Israel as a
haven for Jews."
