ka yeshiva, and in 1903, at
age 15, he came to the U.S.
where five years after his
arrival he was awarded a
scholarship to Havard.
He earned his bachelor's
and doctorate degrees from
Harvard, and joined its
faculty in 1915. In 1925 lie
became full professor and
was named to the Nathan
Littauer chair, the first one
in Jewish studies at an
American secular univer-
sity. ---
A bachelor, Wolfson lunch-
ed and dined each day with
colleayues in what became
to be known as "the Wolf-
son table." According to the
New York Times, Room K
in the Widener Library was
the only place where he felt
at home, and after retire-
ment, he turned up there
every day, half an hour be-
fore the library officially
opened.
Decades ago he organized
a framework for his books
and began writing them, cov-

,from Plato to Spinoza.
He often referred to him-
self as "a nonobservant
orthodox Jew."
Prof. Wolfson worked for
years on Islamic theology.
The result will be published
in the spring by Harvard
University Press in a book
