In the ceremony which greets the new moon it is customary for each of the people to refer to their fellow worshipper and bid him peace by saying "Shalom Alei- chein." Some claim (Maharil) this is becauge when one beholds the new moon one beholds the presence of God. At such a happy meeting people bid each other "peace," or more accurately, wish each other that the glory of God should rest on each other. Actually, the word "Shalom" is usually translated "peace" happens to represent one of the names of the Almighty. When we use it in a context of "Shalom Aleichem" it is tantamount to saying "May God be with you." If the presence of God appears with the arrival of the new moon, it is most fitting to wish each other that His presence shine' over each and every one. A second reason is offered by other sources saying that the greeting of peace from one worshipper to another is used because it follows a quotation from the Bible which has just been recited asking that the fright and tremor of punishment be felt by the evil nations. This has been followed by the bidding of peace so that each wor- shipper turns to his _neighbor saying in effect "that this curse was not meant for you —to you I wish peace." A third explanation is offer- ed by some authors who claim that the bidding of peace stems from the original rea- son for which the moon is a softer light, only appearing at night. The moon, was punished , because it had claimed that there was no need for the sun to be illumi- nated since the moon could shed enough light without the sun because they were ori- ginally of equal radiance. This unwillingness to share led to friction between the moon and the sun. Thus the moon was punished by hav- ing its radiance reduced. Seeing the arrival of the new moon and remembering the friction between the two luminaries, Jews wish each other peace and harmony hoping that they will never come to such a disparity.
