Efforts Mount Spanish Jews May Become More to Save Pact Integrated, AJCommittee Says With Syrians 18—Friday, Sept. 20, 1974 NEW YORK — Jews in Spain are seeking to have their children, become more fully integrated into Spanish life, the American Jewish Committee reported Sunday. According to the commit- tee's European office, Jewish parents in Madrid and Bar- celona, who have until re- cently sent their children to French high s c h o o l s for French - language education, are now requesting instruc- tion in Spanish as well. Realtors 559-3344 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS recognize the qualifications of non-Spanish teachers, such as those trained by the Al- liance Israelite Universelle, and to grant subsidies to Jew- ish schools accepting govern- ment jurisdiction. This was due, at least in part, to the influx of Jews form Tangiers and Tetuan in what was formerly Spanish Morocco. These Jews, the committee noted , were less resistant to putting their children into Spanish schools, although the Jewish com- munity as a whole apprently was not unanimously in favor of so doing. However, the committee in- dicated, the Spanish Ministry of Education's acceptance of the special needs of the Jew- ish community was having its effects, as was the increas- ing interest in acquiring Spanish citizenship for Jews from Morocco and elsewhere. The acquisition of Spanish citizenship for the Moroccan Jews can be vital for their well-being, the committee stressed. Because of the pres- ent hostility between Mor- occo and Spain, Morocco has been taking measures against Spanish citizens there, and Spain is now retaliating against Moroccans. The Jewish Community has apparently been successful in showing that Jews who had to leave Morocco are in a dif- ferent category than other Moroccans living in, Spain. The needs of Jewish schools in Spain were high- lighted recently by Phillippe Halioua, president of the Ma- drid Jewish community. Ha- lioua was seeking support for the creation of a new Jewish school in Madrid, since an older structure, attended by 110 Jewish youngsters, was in such poor condition that the Spanish authorities were about to condemn it as un- suitable. Halioua estimated that the cost of a new building would be about $300,000, of which half could be raised locally. POTTER' MOVING & STORAGE CO. One of Allied Van Lines Largest Haulers 1300 N. An Israeli Radio report quoting UN sources here said that Gen. Ensio Siilasvuo, commander of the United Na- tions Emergency Force was participating in the talks and was joined by Roberto Guyer, the personal representative of UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim. Guyer's appearance in Da- mascus was a surprise and indicated the extremely seri- ous nature of the talks, sources here said. Siilasvuo went to Damascus aftetr a meeting with Defense Minis- ter Shimon Peres. Israel had complained to the UN of increasingly provo- cative Syrian violations of the separation of forces and limitation of forces agree- ments. Israel is particularly concerned over Syria's con- struction of a strategic road to the summit of Mt. Hermon which is located in the UN buffer zone. Scandinavians Tell Optimism on M.E. Peace 'Settlement REYKJAVIK (JTA) — The foreign ministers of the Scandinavian countries ex- pressed optimism here last week that progress will be achieved toward a permanent peace settlement in the Middle East despite grave obstacles that still exist. That view was contained in the official communique issued at the close of the ministers' traditional meet- ing in the Icelandic capital. The nations represented were Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. The ministers urged in their communique that the impetus toward `a just and lasting peace take into ac- count all due considerations including the legitimate rights of the Palestinians." The group stressed the role of international effort to maintain the fragile peace in the Middle East and praised especially ,the contributions of the UN's peace-keeping forces in the region. Yom Ha-Kippurim: Repentance Defined The Day of Atonement, Yom ha-Kippurim, is a holy day of fasting on which man must purify himself. As the Bible states: "For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your. sins shall ye be clean before the Lord." (Lev. 16:30). Repentance is a prerequi- site for divine forgiveness. God will not pardon a man unconditionally but waits for him to repent, the Encyclo- pedia Judaica declares. In repentance man must exper- ience genuine remorse for the wrong he has committed and then convert his penitential energy into positive acts. Man has been endowed by God with the power of "turning." He can turn from evil to the good, and the very act of turning will activate God's concern and lead to forgive- ness. ancient In the religion Israel, in contrast to to that of •. its • neighbors, sacrificial rit- uals are not be themselves purifying, the authoritative Encyclopedia Judaica states. While the required ritual is carried out by the priest, its desired end, forgiveness, is granted solely by God. An- other limitation placed upon sacrifical means of obtaining forgiveness is that it can only apply to inadvertant -errors. Blatant contempt of God can- not be expiated by sacrifice or any other means. More- over, contrition and compas- sion are vital elements of all rituals of forgiveness. It is not enough to hope and pray for pardon: man must humble himself, acknowledge his wrong and resolve to depart from sin. At the same time, remorse must be translated into concrete deeds. Divine forgiveness, how- ever extensive, only encom- passes those sins which man commits directly against Sources Report Rabin-Allon Rift God; those in which injury is caused to one's fellow man, are not forgiven until the in- jured party has himself for- given the perpetrator. Hence the custom of seeking for- giveness from those one may have wronged on the eve of the Day. of Atonement — and the one sinned against is duty bound to forgive. Atonement against one's fellow man is only accomplished if the sin concerned did not involve suffering or material injury to a second party. If it did, full restitution must be made to the wronged party. The idea of repentance, Encyclopedia Judaica ex- plains, played a central role in . the life of the Jew in the post-medieval period, rein- forced by both the penitential liturgy and the rituals of the High Holidays.
