Ruth Dayan to Address Hadassah
on Behalf Israel Bond Campaign

Ruth Dayan, president of
Maskit, the government-op-
erated arts and crafts com-
pany in Israel, will appear
at the home of the president
of Hadassash, Mrs. Jerome
Kaufman, Sept. 29, in behalf
of the State of Israel Bond
Sponsor Program and the 10,
Days of Rededication. Spon-
sors are "Shomrei Israel"—
guardians of Israel and wom-
en who denote identity, par-
ticipation, involvement with
Israel and with their honor
society, through $1,000 Israel
Bond purchases.
This special event is a
forerunner of the "Woman of
the Year" tribute luncheon
which will honor the imme-

Mrs. Dayan has been close-
ly associated with Maskit
since the formation of the
firm in 1954, and under her
guidance the company has
grown. Maskit was formed
to help Israel produce for the
export market and reduce
the country's balance of pay-
ments deficit. It also plays a
key role in keeping alive the
traditional crafts and skills
of Israel.
As head of Maskit, Mrs.
Dayan has extended dip com-
pany's influence to the Arab
and Druze population in Is-
rael, encouraging home in-
dustries in their villages.
Since the Six-Day War, she
has been active in the towns
on the West Bank and in the
Gaza Strip, finding markets
for Arab handicrafts and
sugesting new materials and
lines.
A recognized authority in
the field, Mrs. Dayan has
represented Israel at inter-
national conferences on arts
and crafts. She is also active
in welfare work for Jewish

Judith Beilin, a member of
the Israel Foreign Affairs
Ministry and consul of Is-
rael in New York will speak
7 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Washte-
naw Country Club on behalf
of the State of Israel Bonds
campaign.
An Israeli Consul since
1961, Mrs. Beilin makes sev-
eral return trips to her coun-
try each year. Earlier this
year, she represented Israel
at the commission on the
status of women at the UN.
Prior to her appointment
RUTH DAYAN
as consul, Mrs. Beilin served
and Arab children and was as liaison officer for the for-
vice chairman of the Israel eign ministry in connection
with the hundreds of foreign
Variety Club.
Mrs. Dayan is a native of
Haifa, but spent her early
childhood in London where
her father studied law. After
returning- to Israel, she at-
tended high school in Jeru-
salem, then transferred to
an agricultural school at Na-
halal, Israel's first commu-
nal farming village.
Mrs. Dayan has just writ-
ten a book "Crafts of Is-
rael" published by Macmil-
lan. She was the wife of the
former Defense Minister of
Israel, Moshe Dayan.

to work for the underground
radio station of the Hagana.
In May 1948 when the estab-
lishment of the state of Is-
rael was proclaimed, she an-
nounced the news in a his-
toric broadcast over Hagana
Radio Haifa.

MRS. JUDITH BEILIN

correspondents stationed in
Israel to cover the Eichmann
trial. She also received, on
behalf of the government,
visitors from the Americas,
the British Commonwealth,
Asia, Africa and Scandinavia.
Born and educated in
Great Britain, Judith Benin
received her degree in dra-
ma and theater arts from the
Royal Academy of Dramatic
Art in London. As a member
of some of England's most
renowned -repertory compan-
ies, she achieved success as
an actress both on the stage
and with the BBC, and in a
number of plays acted to-
gether with Michael Red-
grave.
In the late 1930's Mrs.
Beilin gave up her acting
career to marry Harry Beil-
in, and settled in then-Pales-
tine with him. She has made
her permanent home there
since 1938.
From 1938 to 1951, the Beil-
ins participated in every
phase of the establishment
and development of modern
Israel. While her husband
served as liaison between the
Jewish Agency and the Brit-
ish mandatory government,
she was active in the Hagana
and also in the program for
founding new settlements.
