Israeli Holiday Worshipers
Urged to Bring Guns to Services

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Worshipers in Salad
carried their firearms to synagogue on Rosh
Hashana.
Inspector Itzhak Deutch, the local police com-
mander, made this unusual request in case terror-
ists should try an attack on a synagogue during the
High Holy Days.
Most of the children who were killed by terror-
ists in the Ma'alot schoolhouse were from Safad.
Elsewhere in the country, the local police and civil
defense prepared plans for the protection of syn-
agogues and other places of prayer during the
holidays.

13-Week Gloom for Israel
at UN General Assembl

Special to The Jewish News
UNITED NATIONS, N.Y.-
The 13-week session of the
United Nations General As-
sembly opened the first - day
of Rosh Hashana with pros-
pects of gloom for Israel.

Declaring that the U.S. will
expand aid to underdeveloped
countries with wheat and food
supplies, in spite of the Arab
oil tactics, Presient Ford
warned against continuation
of such obstructionist tactics.

The session began with
threats from the Afro-Asian,
Soviet and Arab blocs that
the Middle East problem will
be utilized in efforts to chal-
lenge Israel, to seek injection
of the Palestine Liberation
Organization into a prominent
role in consideration of the
mounting problems and un-
doubtedly to aim at ..condem-
nation of Israel in many re-
vived manipulations of attack
on the Jewish state.
The threat became apparent
with the unanimous election
of Abdelaziz Bouteflika, for-
eign minister of Algeria, as
president of the General As-
sembly, who at once launched
into a demand for recogni-
tion of the PLO. He did not
mention Israel by name but
demanded punishment for re-
tention of occupied territory
in Palestine and „made no
secret of the intention to pur-
esue attacks on the Jewish
state.
BecauSe of Rosh Hashana,
the Israel delegation did not
attend the session.

JERUSALEM (JTA)—For-
eign Minister Yigal Allon will
