Evil Knievel is a bad
sport, but not in the tradi-
tional sense of the word.
According to a story in the
earlier editions of Friday's
Detroit News, Knievel re-
fused to speak to Robert
Arum, president of Top
Rank, Inc. a New York-
based firm that controls
closed circuit television
rights for sports events, for
financing because "there are
three things in this world
that he hates the most —
lawyers, New Yorkers and
Jews."
To that Arum replied: "So
for me strike three." Arum
is a graduate of Harvard
law school, former assistant
U.S. attorney general for the
'Southern district of New
York and a Jew.
However, in the final edi-
tion of the News, Arum was
quoted as saying that Knie-
vel refused to see him be-
cause he "hates lawyers and
New York types."
Knievel, whose real name
is Robert, failed in his at-
tempt Sunday to cross the
V3-mile wide Snake River
Canyon in Twin Falls, Idaho,
when a parachute on his en-
gine - powered motorcycle
opened prematurely drop-
ping him and the motor-
cycle into the river.

An oil-on-canvas painting
of a pair of enticing red lips,
aptly entitled "-invitation,"
was among the works dis-
played Sunday by Max Shaye
in a preview of his art works
to go on sale this weekend
to benefit Hillel Day School
of Detroit.

Shaye, a businessman and
philanthropist, painted the
more than 180 oil-on-canvas
and serigraph-on-paper paint-
ings displayed at his spa-
cious suburban home. ' Ab-
stracts, sunsets, still life
paintings with fruit, a tiger
entitled "Big Car' and
Shaye's imposing "Champion"
pictured here, a black oil-on-
canvas bull, were exhibited
gallery-style throughout the
lower floor of his home and
on the grounds.
A student of Sarkis Sarkis-
ian at the Society of Arts and
Crafts here, New York-born
Shaye has been painting for
the past 17 years. He paints

shown at a champagne re-
ception 9:15 p.m. Saturday
at Hillel Day School.
The following day, Sunday,
the show will be open to the
public beginning at noon at
the school. At 3 p.m., Shaye
will give an illustrated talk
on "Everything You Wanted
to Know About Art, but Were
Afraid to Ask.' Proceeds
from the art show/sale will
go to the Hillel Day School
Scholarship Fund. Admission
