The Husseins of Jordan Vis-a-Vis Israel's Role W. McNichols Editor The Jewish News: (pp. 62-3) a letter from me In the September issue of critical of the widespread use "The Progressive" there is of the term "the Arab world" as if it corresponds to an historical fact, rather than a mirage. he Royal Institute of International Affairs publish- ed a book, just before the Six-Day (1967) War broke out, "The Arab Cold War 1958-1967," by Malcolm Kerr. According to this book, the "cold war" was not against Israel, which is hardly men- tioned, but of Arab against Arab. On the last page, there is reference to Egypts "hapless allies," dragged into the war against Israel "to which their own rivalries had let them." One such "hapless ally' was Jordan. In my letter from Jerusalem which you printed on March 29 this year, there is evidence that Syria does not concede that "Palestine" is anything but a part of Sy- ria and that King Hussein's Uniltt claim to any part of it is an usurpation. Stars of Love When his grandfather, Ab- DESIGNER OE DIST dullah, after the 1948-49 war, seized East Jerusalem and the West Bank, it was in de- fiance of the Arab League, including Egypt and Syria. In 1951, King Abdullah was assasinated in front of the Aksa Mosque in Jerusalem, his body, according to the story, serving as a shield for rats. young Hussein who was with Nr. In August, 1952, Hus- sein became the King of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jor- dan but he did not exercise his royal prerogatives until he reached his 18th birthday. In the Aug. 25, 1958 Washington Daily News, the late Henry N. Taylor (later killed in the Congo in the line of duty as a newspaperman) predicted that King Hussein wouldn't last either. His cou- sin King Faisal of Iraq had just been assasinated with other members of the Hashe- mite family and the Prime Minister. Jordan, which had entered into A union with Iraq was doomed to extinc- tion, together with the Bagh- dad Pact. Lebanon was in such dan- ger from other Arabs that President Eisenhower sent the Marines there, Britain sent troops into Jordan, flown over the skies of Is- rael, which also allowed to pass through the life-giving fuel into Jordan, which oil- rich Arab neighbors, includ- ing the Saudi enemies of the Hashemites, refused to let it. In his book, "Uneasy Lies the Heads' (1962) King Hus- sein complains bitterly that he had to be saved by the Is- raeli "enemy' against the knives of his Arab "broth- ers." In 1970, Syrian tanks threatened King Hussein's r u 1 e . The Aug. 18, 1974 Washington Post reports King Hussein's denial . of the claim in the book, "Kissing- er," by Marvin and Bernard Kalb, that in September, 1970, through the United States, Jordan had request- ed that Israel provide air support against advancing Syrian tanks. But Israel is not his worst enemy. In the September Com- mentary magazine (letter, page 30), Prof. Eugene . V. Rostow, of the Yale Univer- sity Law School, supports the claim of Jordan, and, by implication, King Hussein, to be the only lawful authority with which Israel can nego- tiate, on "Palestine," which includes both Israel and Jor- dan, "the successor states to the Ottoman (Turkish) Em- pire within the territories of the original Mandate (of the League- of Nations). The Security Council's de- cisions require and authorize Jordan and Israel, and no one else, to define, secure and recognized boundaries between them, and, on that basis, make peace. If special arrangements for the auto- nomy of the West Bank are to be made, it is for Jordan to do so, within the parts of the area which are ultimate- ly returned to its authority."
