Rabbi Edward Sandrow spoke for the Conservative rabbinate and for Rabbi Segal's confreres in the Con- servative movement. As special adviser to the presi- dent of the Jewish Theologi- cal Seminary, Rabbi Segal's alma mater, Rabbi Sandrow expressed gratitude for no- table accomplishments in the advancement of the spiritual tasks among youth as well as adults. U.S. Circuit Court Judge Wade McCree gave evi- dence, in another address at the testimonial dinner, of the esteem in which Rabbi Se- gal is held in the interracial community. The entire week-end's fes- tivities marked Rabbi Seg- al's- 35th anniversary in the rabbinate and his 28th year as spiritual leader of Adat Shalom. Moving and impressive in all aspects, the Sabbath morning service was en- hanced by the "sermon" given for the first time by a woman. The address by Mrs. Morris (Goldie) Adler had special significance in her emphasis on the con- cept of learning. Packed with interpretive references to a rabbi's role as teacher, Mrs. Adler in her speech of less than 10 minutes defined the major role of being a teach- er, a rabbi in Israel. The festive spirit of the Sabbath services was en- hanced by a large atten- dance of Shaarey Zedek members and representa- tions from Temple Beth El and other synagogues. Not only the congregation- al response but the family mood added glamor to the events. At the conclusion of the Sabbath service, Jean (Mrs. Jacob) Segal gave the invocation and drew upon a portion from the Isaiah Haf- tara, chanted by her hus- Put it all together for Fall with our spirited new fashions! In response to a gift from the synagogue sisterhood by Alice Goldsmith, Mrs. Segal read a poem she had writ- ten in gratitude to the syn- agogue and to her husband. Samuel Frankel and Sol Eisenberg, co-chairmen of the dinner arrangements committee, presided at the banquet. In tribute to Rabbi Segal, Annette Chajes, accompan- ied by her husband, Julius Chajes, sang "Old Jerusa- lem" and "Kakha." Dr. Julius Segal, Rabbi Segal's brother, spoke for the Segal family at the din- ner. A presentation in behalf of the youth of Adat Shalom was presented to the rabbi by Judith Pollack. Deeply moving responses by Rabbi Segal, to the trib- utes on his 35th anniversary as a rabbi and his 28th an- niversary as spiritual lead- er of Adat Shalom, at the Sabbath service as well as the dinner program added moving interest to both oc- casions.
