Theodore Bikel came to Detroit to sue Cong. Shaarey Zedek on a charge of the synagogue having broken a contract for his appearance here in 1970; Abraham Satov- sky, the volunteer attorney for the synagogue, main- tained that the famous enter- tainer had not signed a con- tract and Judge Clarence Reid Jr. ruled in favor of the synagogue. This, in summary, is the in- teresting result of a judicial two-day debate that took place in the Southfield Mu- nicipal Court Monday and Tuesday. Mrs. Peter Martin, who negotiated for the Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood with Bikel in September of 1969 for an appearance here the following April, gave testimony to prove how the women had consistently asked Bikel to ei rp, contract; how he had procrastinated; how he had been given until Dec. 1 to sign and submit his con- tract and did not do so until after the expiration date. Bikel's attorney, Joseph Golden, maintained that a verbal contract existed and that Shaarey Zedek was re- sponsible for the agreement, and Bikel insisting his repu- tation was damaged, sued for $10,000. Judge Reid, in his ruling, upheld the claim made by Satovsky that the contract must be signed and delivered, and that the claimed verbal INVITATIONS • ENTERTAINN • CARICATURES 1 • ASTROLOGER • CLOWNS • BELLY BAKE! became apparent that the ef- • HENRI WAKNt fort to contract Bikel for an • AL SIMMS ;. contract is not binding.
