`Yom Kippur War' Volume Chronicles Issues Plaguing Israel Since October
Yom Kippur War shocks
aroused world Jewry to em-
erging responsibilities. New
unifying forces developed in
tasks to assure Israel's secur-
ity and the non-recurrence of
anything approaching the
near-calamity of that tragic
day a year ago.
For a thorough evaluation
of the unity between Israel
and world Jewry, for an un-
derstanding of the duties and
dedications, President Eph-
PRESIDENT KATZIR
raim Katzir of Israel con-
vened world Jewish authorita-
tive personalities to review
the situation and to define re-
lationships and cooperative
efforts.
The prominence of the par-
ticipants from all parts of the
globe, the fact that the most
distinguished Jewish scholars
joined in the sessions in Jer-
usalem last December, so
close to the Day of Atone-
ment calamities that struck
Norman Lamm, Prof. Marie
Syrkin, Prof. Daniel Elazar
and others from the United
States; Prof. Emil Facken-
heim, among the Canadians;
Dr. Isaiah Berlin of London
and many others.
Introducing the volume and
the discussions, President
Katzir stated:
"I sometimes think that for
a small and weak people like
the Jews great ideas served
as the source of strength.
Jewish revival in our time is
inconceivable in any other
framework, and here Israel
has a central role to play —
in spiritual and social terms
alike. If the state meets the
test of realizing our ideals, it
will become not only the cen-
ter but the magnet for Jews
everywhere and provide the
humane answer of a small,
free state to some of the
overwhelming and frighten-
ing problems of our time."
Especially notable is the
program of action outlined in
the summation by Prof. Davis
who propounds:
"I suggest the following
considerations based on my
reading of contemporary Jew-
ish existence in a changing
world order.
"I). World Jewish planning
should take into account the
choice of the majority of
Jews to live outside Israel,
and build their homes and
their Jewish group life in
open societies of expanding
freedom.
"2). Israel has a creative
role to play in the develop-
ment of a continuing Dias-
pora; and world Jewish com-
munities share responsibility
for the shaping of the Jewish
future in Israel.
"3). In many countries of

Israel, affirmed the world-
wide kinships and the inter-
ests that were aroused by the
calls to strengthened kinships
and the readiness with which
the anticipated unity was at-
tained.
The basic views expressed
at the sessions with Presi-
dent Katzir have been incor-
porated in a volume that
serves as the chronicle of
world Jewish opinion on the
issues that developed during
and from the last war. Pub-
lished jointly by Herzl Press
and the New York Arno
Press, "The Yom Kippur
War — Israel and the Jewish
People" contains the major
extracts from that record of
thorough discussions which in
its totality, preserved for the
official Israeli records, con-
tains 1,000 pages of micro-
filmed transcripts.
"The Yom Kippur War"
was edited by Dr. Moshe
Davis, head of the Hebrew
University's Institute of Con-
temporary Jewry.
The participants included
such notable scholars as Dr.
There are higher objects
in life than success. The Sab-
bath, with its exhortation to
the worship of God and the
doing of kindly deeds, re-
minds us week by week of
these higher objects. It pre-
vents us reducing our life to
the level of a machine. The
gathered experience of man-
kind that the break in the
routine of work one day in
seven will heighten the val-
ue of the very work itself is
not lightly to be put aside.
The Sabbath is one of the
glories of our humanity. For
if to labor is noble, of our
own free will to pause in that
labor which may lead to
success, to money, or to
fame, may be nobler still. To
dedicate one day a week to
rest and to God, this is the
prerogative and privilege of
man alone. It is an ordinance
which we may rightly. call
Divine. Let every boy and
every young man, let every
girl and every young woman,
get out of the habit of ceas-
ing from their work on the
Sabbath day at their own
peril.—Claude G. Montefiore•
