Caribbean Jewish Communities Hold
1st WK-Sponsored Parley in Curacao
NEW YORK — The first
conference of Jewish com-
munities of the Caribbean
was held in Curacao earlier
this month under the aus-
pices of the American Section
of the World Jewish Con-

tending at the last moment
due to emergencies.
Ambassador Jochanan
Bein, Israel Ambassador to
the Dominican Republic and
Jamaica came from Santo
Domingo to attend the meet-
ing, and addressed the Satur-
day night dinner.
Among the resolutions
adopted at the conference
was one calling for the for-
mation of a federation of
Carribbean Jewish communi-
ites to be affiliated with the
World Jewish Congress, and
linked with the North Ameri-
can Section of the World Jew-
ish Congress. The resolution
notes that the Caribbean com-
munities are either linguisti-
cally, culturally or geograph-
ically closer to North than to
South America.
Hosts to the conference
were the Shaarei Tsedek
Congregation of Curacao,
President Dr. Paul Acker-
man, and the Mikveh Israel
Congregation, President Rene
M aduro.
Among the delegates were
the former Governor of the
Virgin Islands, Ralph Paie-
wonsky; Max Kirchner, the
Legal Consultant to the Gov-
ernment of St. Thomas; Dr.
D. Arrias, Legal Adviser to

the session which dealt with
the specific educational needs

Bernstein and the New York
Philharmonic recently per-
formed to an audience in
Tokyo as part of a tour in-
cluding New Zealand and
Australia..
According to Richard Hal-
loran, a New York Times
correspondent, about 30 lis-
teners rushed to the edge of
the stage during the applause
at the end of the perform-
ance, grasped Bernstein by
the hand, tugged wildly at
him, and thrust bouquets of
flowers upon him.
During a press conference,
Bernstein -.said that he had
seen many changes in Japan
since his first visit 13 years
ago. But he said the audi-
ences haven't changed. "They
are just as insane and as
deeply dedicated to Western
music as they were the first
time."
A leading Japanese music
critic, Kazuyuki Toyama, at-
tributed the emotional out-
burst following the perform-
ance to the widespread in-
fluence of TV. "Japanese
audiences used to be very
quiet," he said. "But people
have gotten used to enter-
tainers on TV that they tend
to feel as though the enter-
tainers are part of their
group."

JERUSALEM — Sheik Mo-
hammed Ali Ja'abari, mayor
of Hebron, has called for the
establishment of an interna-
tional administration in any
part of Judea and Samaria
from which Israel withdraws
as part of a political settle-
ment.
As reported in the Jerusa-
lem Post, the sheik said that
because of the conflicting
claims of Jordan .and the
Palestine Liberation Organi-
zation, the areas in question
should therefore be given to
neither, but rather placed
under international control
pending the exercise of self-
determination by local in-
habitants.
