2 Israeli Soldiers, 2 Terrorists Killed
in Fierce Battle Near Lebanese Border

By YITZIIAK SHARGIL
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Two
Israeli soldiers were killed
Wednesday m o r n i n g, two
others wounded and two ter,
rorists were slain in a brief,
fierce gun •battle in an olive
grove in Western Galilee
south of the Lebanese border.
Leaflets found on the ten
rorists' bodies indicated that
their mission was to capture
Israeli hostages whose lives
would be exchanged for the
release of 20 terrorists in
Israeli prisons and the re-
lease of the Greek Catholic
Archbishop Hill•rion Capucci
who was indicted in Jeru-
salem Tuesday on charges of
smuggling arms to terrorists
inside Israel.
Israeli authorities flatly
denied Wednesday a claim
by the Popular Democratic
Front for the \ Liberation of
Palestine in Damascus that
its men were holding a num-
ber o f Israelis hostage in
northern Israel.
The authorities said that
t w o terrorists involved in
Wednesday's clash were
killed and one was captured.
The - gang, which infiltrated
from Lebanon, was con-
fronted by an Israeli patrol
in the olive grove outside
Fassuta, an Arab Catholic
village.
A curfew was clamped on
Fassuta after the clash as
Israeli forces combed t h e
area for more infiltrators. It
was lifted later.
The incident was the sec-
ond in two days involving
terrorists from Lebanon. Two
terrorists were killed Tues-
day by an Israeli patrol only
a few 'hundred yards from
t h e Lebanese border. The
two incidents confirmed re-
cent indications that terror-
ists based in Lebanon were
about to embark on a lerge-
scale sabotage assault on Is-
rael with the objective of
seizing as many hostages as
possible.
The terrorists killed Tues-
day a n d Wednesday • were
carrying large quantities of
ammunition, hand grenades,
explosive devices, small arms
and Kalachnikoff rifles and
transistor radios. In addition,
they carried quantities of
pamphlets in Hebrew, Eng-
lish an Arabic containing de-
mands for the re lease of
imprisoned terrorists and de-
tailed instructions as to how
their exchange for Israeli
hostages was to be effected.

found Tuesday named the
ambassadors of Fr a n c e,
Switzerland and Romania as
possible go-betweens in the
exchange. The leaflets found
Wednesday contained blank
spaces which the terrorists
presumably would have filled
in with their choice of go-
between.
Instructions demanded that
the diplomats selected were
to approach the terrorists
wearing no jackets and with
a stretched out hand holding
their passport. The terrorists
demanded not only the re-
lease of 20 of their comrades
but return of the bodies of

forces at Ma'alot and Nahari-

Wednesday were the first
Israeli fatalities since the

when a soldier was killed

terrorist gang had barricaded

mother and her two children.
Their names have not been
disclosed.
Israeli security authorities
have been anticipating in-

organizations. They say the
terrorists have two aims: to

TEL AVIV (JTA) — It was
back to school for Israeli
youngsters Sunday. A record
1,000,000 of them trooped into
some 8,000 schools of all lev-
els and trends all over the
country. According to Eliezer
Shmueli, acting director gen-
eral of the education minis-
try, this year there will be
no classes without teachers
and no classes without class-
rooms.
Shmueli said about 200,000
children were enrolled in
kindergarten, 500,000 in ele-
mentary schools and the re-
mainder in high schools,
junior high schools and teach-
ers' training seminaries.
He stressed that this year,
security measures at schools
will be stricter than ever be-
fore in light of the Ma'alot
and Kiryat Shemona inci-
dents.
In virtually all schools,
parents and teachers have
organized patrols during
school hours. Security fences
are being erected around
school buildings. Parents in
one Tel Aviv school district
refused to send their children
to classes until the security
fence is completed.
There were no back to
school hitches in Jerusalem
although some teachers fail-
ed to report because they are
still on military reserve duty.
Two schools remained closed
in Kiryat Shemona — one be-
cause of a dispute with par-
ents over the dismissal of a
principal and the other be-
cause repairs were not com-
pleted.
Eilat opened a junior high-
school for the first time. New
schools have also been open-

ed at Ophira, formerly known
as Sharm el-Sheikh in south-
ern Siani.
Meanwhile, more than 3,000
Arab students in the Gaza
Strip returned Monday to
Egypt to continue their uni-
versity studies there. The

day in Gaza under an Israeli-

recognition by the U.S. and
the United Nations when the
Middle East peace confer-
ence is resumed at Geneva.
In response, Israeli au-
thorities have increased se-
curity measures along the
borders. It was disclosed that
in recent weeks a number of
terrorists have been captured
or killed trying to enter Is-
raeli territory from Jordan,
Lebanon and Syria.
Meanwhile, in B o n n, a
Palestinian terrorist group
claimed responsibility for a
bomb attack on a Mannheim
crane works. The explosion
caused damages totalling
DM100,000.
The works is a subsidiary
of the Korf group, which in
1972 invested DM 30,000,000
in an Israeli steel firm. The
bomb in Mannheim went off
25 minutes after the time-
bomb that partially wrecked
the Israeli travel bureau in
Frankfurt.
In T e 1 Aviv, an Israeli
army unit clashed with a
terrorist gang in the southern
Golan Heights Aug. 28. A
communique issued Sept. 2
said two of t h e terrorists
were hit but did not specify
whether they were killed, or
wounded and captured. There
