Movie 'The Ballad of Kiryat Shemona' Emphasizes Creativity vs. Destruction in Town By AVI Z. BENYAMIN The ballad came to Kiryat Shemona. It came not in verse and music, but in determination, hope and strength etched on people's faces, in the quietly spoken words, "This is our home, we will not leave, we are all one family here." Kiryat Shemona bade the world's headlines when a murderous band of three ter- rorists slipped into the town, occupied a block of flats, and slaughtered its inhabitants. A total of 18 civilians, most the women and children, e murdered before the Israel Defense Forces suc- ceeded in cutting down the terrorists. What did it mean? Could there be any meaning to this murder of the innocents? Who were the victims? Main- ly people, or their children and grandchildren, who them- selves had been brutally ex- pelled from neighboring coun- tries, who had been welcom- ed by their Israeli brethren and helped to a new life in Kiryat Shemona. Kiryat Shemona is a 1p- neering town. LIFIVIPIA STADIUM 5920 GRAND RIVER DETROIT, MICHIGAN 48208 Tel Hai, just a shPrt distance away, from Arab attack. The bravery of Joseph Trumpel- dor and the other martyrs of Tel Hai was matched by the waves of pioneers who followed and planted kibutz farms and moshav villages in Upper Galilee—and by the pioneers of the new State of Israel who created the town — now a city — of Kiryat Shemona. For this is the meaning of Kiryat Shemona; the deter- mination of a people to build a free creative life of its own land; a people liberating it- self from centuries of dis- crimination and degradation through the labor of its own hands through the valor of its own defenders. On the other side, there are those who destroy; those who can only think in terms of mur- der and- destruction, who try to demolish what others have created. In deciding to make a short film about Kiryat Shemona, the Audio-Visual Unit of the World Zionist Organization's Information Division wanted to catch this moment of con- trast on film, the destroyers vs. the builders. The result, "The Ballad of Kiryat Shemona," makes the terrible time of slaughter come alive. It also depicts the determi- nation of the people of a town, ingathered from some 80 lands, to continue build- ing their community. The first showing of the 25-minute film was held in Kiryat Shemona itself, in the city's attractive Edelman Cultural Center. Mayor Avra- ham Aloni invited the heads of various municipal depart- ments and other notables, as well as those citizens of his city who appear in the film. In his introductory remarks the mayor noted, his hopes that the city of nearly MOO will grow. to 100,000; that now that people have heard of Kiryat Shemona they will get involved with it. The WZO's Director of In- formation, Moshe Gilboa, re- called that he had -last seen Mayor Aloni over 20 years ago when both had been active in the Wor king Youth Movement. Then, as Head of its Cultural Depart- ment, Avraham Aloni had or- ganized thousands of youths into pilgrimages to Tel Hai, seeing it as one of the foun- tainheadi of Zionist pioneer- ing. Perhaps, in response to his own activities in those years, Avraham Aloni him- self moved to within a short distance of Tel Hai and to- day serves as Mayor of the city honoring its heroes. The film was well received. "It's strong" one young ob- server noted, "I was there just after the tragedy, in that building, and the film really caught it." An educator sug- gested that it be shown to all youth in the city. The Mayor requested a public showing for all of Kiryat Shemona's citizens. Talmud Stresses Prayer in Synagogue By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright 1974, JTA, Inc.) Sages in the Talmud strongly stressed the require- ment to pray in the syna- gogue. They even called anyone who refrained from praying in the local syna- gogue "a bad neighbor" (Tal- mud Berokoth 8:A). Other places in the Talmud declare that a person who never en- tered a synagogue would lose his status as a member of the Jewish people in the world to come. There are a number of reasons why the rabbis in- sisted that a man prefer to pray in the synagogue. One reason is that the synagogue is a place regularly set aside for prayer and thus pro- vides the proper environment for prayer. Another reason is that the synagogue repre- sents the place of community prayer and that the survival of each individual Jew de- pends upon the survival of the Jewish community. This is because the value of ex- istence of each individual Jew, as precious as it is, is measured by the value of the existence of the ccmin, adty. The individual value of the Jew is enhanced and made worth-while by the existence of the community. Any dis- tortion or defection in the life of a community has its repercussion in the life of the individual Jew. While no one can ever achieve perfec- tion by himself, since we are all human, the community as a whole, by adding up the virtues of each constituent member, represents the kind of perfection in which each individual can revel. Prayer is, indeed, based on the virtue of the man who prays. Since every man in- dividually lacks some virtue, his record cannot always sup- port his claim in prayer. However, the record of the community can support his claim of existence, survival and development as a mem- ber of the community. One who stays away from the community and prays alone demonstrates that he does not wish to avail himself of the virtue of the community. And the hand of fate is also responsible for many black eyes. —Rex Reed, N.Y. Daily News A Po, Relqw no ,onol C ■ nerIsed.
