Malben's Deaf Education School Has 1st Graduation; Expands
TEL AVIV—When MICHA,
an acronym in Hebrew for
educators for the deaf in-
augurated its new home here
'n the spring, and then held
its first graduation at the end
of June, representatives of
Malben, the Joint Distribution
Committee program in Is-
rael, were as proud as any
of the parents present.
Of the graduates, six were
able to go directly into nor-
mal classes, three even
moved into the second grade;
five are being sent to a spe-
cial school for deaf children.
MICHA was founded 20
years ago by a group of par-
ents in support of a pioneer-
ing otologist, Dr. Ezra Kor-
ine, now director of the au-
_al institute at the Tel
di
__ler Hospital, but still
Ha
MICHA's chairman. From its
beginning, serving,' four chil-
dren in a small basement
apartment, it has grown
steadily and now 1506 children
benefit from the facilities of
the new, ultra-modern, well
equipped $500,000 building.
JDC/Malben has been
helping MICHA financially
since shortly after it was
founded. The JDC receives
p r OPEN
funds from its overseas as-
sistance programs mainly
from the United Jewish Ap-
peal. '-

utilize and strengthen even
the smallest amount of resid-
ual hearing, to speak because
there is nothing wrong with
his vocal chords, and to par-
ticipate in the activities of
the normal hearing world
around him.
The children range in age
