Firsthand Tales of Survivors
Engulfed in 'Sparks of Glory'

"Sparks of Glory" (Shen-
gold Publishers, Inc.) retells
the many stories of the Jews
who clinged to their faith,
traditions, customs, prayers
and hope during the Holo-
caust, in the words of the
survivors.
The series of narrations
are factual; they were re-
corded from the heroes of
the stories, who themselves
did not realize they were
heroes.
The author, Moshe Prager
(pe• name for Moshe Mark),
writes an impressive book,
representing years of travel
and interviews.
Shortly after World War
II, Prager went to Europe
and interviewed survivors of
the Holocaust. Their experi-
ences recorded in this book
span the ghettoes, the death
camps, the forests and the
steppes.
The author writes that the
stories represented in his
book are "an attempt to bring
together the scattered sparks,

which, joined, will burn as
a mighty flame of kidush
ha'shem, the santification of
the Divine name."
The pages tell about people
refusing to die a spiritual
death while being threatened
with physical death as a tra-
gic yet glorious panoply of
Jewish life during the years
of the Nazi occupation un-
folds.
One excerpt from an inter-
view with the author illus-
trates why these accounts
are justly called Sparks of
Glory; •
"And were there Jews who
prayed in that hell?"
What a question? Even I
prayed every single day."
"And did you have Tefilin
there, in the death camps?"
"Of coures, I put on Tefi-
lin and I guarded them in all
the camps and under' all con-
ditions."
"How? How can I believe
this? And those monsters,
what did they say?"
"What's the difference?
Nothing can stand in the
way of man's will."
The book is far from a per-
fect piece of literature—the
language is purposely , not
carefully groomed, in order
to fully maintain . the emo-
tional expressions of the sur-
vivors.
Specific stores will cap-
ture the senses and demand
repeated readings. The read
er must be cautioned —
Sparks of Glory will readily
become a focal point of con-
versations, stories will be
reread, retold and remem-
bered.
Each narration can easily
be written as a complete
book by itself. But, the au-
thor leaves it up to the read-
er's imagination to expand
upon the realties of the in-
cidents.
Prager was born in War-
saw in 1909. His articles on
Jewish religious life and folk-
lore began to appear in the
Yiddish and Hebrew press in
Poland as early as 1926.
In 1940, Prager risked his
life sending out reports de-
scribing Nazi atrocities in
Poland. For his role in the
Hagana, the Israeli under-
ground, he received the OT
HaHagana decoration. The
author now resides in B'nei
B'rak, Israel.
Mordecai Schreiber, who
edited a national Jewish
magazine, translated Prag-
er's work for this edition.
