Capucci Trial Immunity Used by Prosecutor, Defense Lawyers

JERUSALEM (J T A) —
State Prosecuting Attorney
Gabriel Bach and Defense
Attorney Aziz Shehade, ar-
gued in court Wednesday
over whether Greek Catholic
Archbishop Hillarion Capucci
can be tried on the arms
smuggling and other charges
for which he was indicted
Tuesday.
Shehade argued that his
client was immune because
he held a special service
passport approved by the for-
eign ministry. Bach also op-
posed a defense request that
Capucci be transferred from
jail to house arrest because
of his privileged status as a
member of the clergy.
Judge Miriam Ben Porat
of the Jerusalem District
Court said she would render

Meanwhile Melchite Patri-
arch Maximus V vigorously
defended as a hero Archbish-
op Capucci.
The Melchite Patriarch, in
Rome to discuss the affair
with Vatican authorities, said
as of now there is "no certain
proof" of Capucci's guilt. He
further implied that Israeli
security officials had planted
weapons in the archbishop's
car after he was taken into
custody and then claimed
they had discovered the wea-
pons.
Maximus noted that even if
Capucci were guilty of aiding
the Palestinians, "what the
Israelis call guilt the Arabs
call heroism." He added: 'It

JEWISH CAMPING: Some Jewish groups with resi-
dent camps for school age children have for years main-
tained their camps as part of their Jewish school system.
This is particularly the case with ideological and denomi-
national groups. However, communal camps—maintained
by community • centers, Jewish federations and philan-
thropic groups— have been merely a place for fresh air
and recreation. Their sponsors looked upon them just as a
place to keep the children away from city streets during
the summer when the public schools are closed. No edu-
cational importance was attached to them.
During the last year, however, a distinct awareness has
arisen in the communities to the value of • Jewish educa-
tional content in the camps. With every year, more and
more stress has been laid on the necessity of constructive
Jewish programs in the communal camps. Leading in this
movement were Jewish educators centered around the Media to Promote

tion for Jewish Education.
Today, the importance of using the Jewish camps as
instruments to supplement formal Jewish education is no NYC Day Schools
