Jacob Bronowski,
Scientist, Writer, 66

NEW YORK — Dr. Jacob
Bronowski, TV series writer,
promoter of the philosophical
basis of scientific research
and a resident fellow of the
Salk Institute in La Jolla,
Calif., since 1964, died Aug.
22 at age 66.

Dr. Bronowski's latest at-
tempt to describe the place
of science in human history,
a 13-part British TV series
called "The Ascent of Man,"
will be shown on American
TV this winter.

The author of many books,
including "Science and Hu-
man Values," Dr. Bronowski
urged a loosening of ties be-
tween scientists and govern-
ments. At the close of his
series, he said, "If we do
not make the next step in the
ascent of man, it will be
taken elsewhere, in Africa, in
China."
