The contest is open to stu- dents of high schools, col- leges, universities and other educational institutions. The contestant must agree to the enumerated rules. Each entry must reflect the independent research efforts of the contestant and contain no less than 4,000 and no more than 7,000 words. Three copies of each entry must be submitted, and should be typed, double-spaced and on one side of the paper only. Center Swim Club Popular The Red Cross—Swim and Stay Fit Program at the main Jewish Center is gaining popularity because of its re- laxed physical fitness regi- men • According to Audrey Holm- berg, aquatic director at the Center, the program has 68 members, almost more than it can handle. The program is designed to encourage individuals to swim on a regular basis to improve circulation, strength- en abdominal muscles, in- crease movement within the joints and to relieve physical and mental tension. Persons participating in the program are required to swim 1/4 of a mile (18 laps) during each visit, and are allowed to rest between laps if they wish. Each per- son may record his distance, and every two months his mileage is computed and sub- mitted to the Center News. Top distance swimmers are Bettie Eichenhorn, 8261/2 miles; Dr. B. Katz, 619 1/2 miles; and Irving Collen, 600 3 /4 miles. Other top swimmers are Frances Gothelf, Lou Issacs, Evelyn Silverman and Ira Gantz. New members include Ben Gorney, Jewish News adver- tising salesman, who at age 81 swims 3 /4 of a mile two or three times a week; How- ard Chak, Betty Shapiro, Burt Applebaum, Doris Good- man, David Goodman and Pearl Sherman. Red Cross certificates are issued upon the completion of 50 miles. Patches and pins also are available. The Cen- ter awards trophies to swim- mers who reach the 500 mile mark. Champion of the league was Al Jolson AZA of Livonia. Alexander D. Goode AZA came in second place. Gail Shifman of Glazer BBG has been appointed to the position of international service fund chairman by the District Six BBG Association. Last year, Gail served as treasurer of the Great Lakes BBG Council. She is vice president for outstate areas. The first BBG Council meeting of the 1974-75 pro- gram year will be held 7 p.m. Thursday at the BBYO Coun- cil Office. The first AZA Council meeting of the year will be held 7 p.m. Sept. 9, at the BBYO Council Office. Bnai Moshe Youth Set Shabat Services Cong.
