TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
largest Israeli team ever to
participate in international
sports in Teheran for par-
ticipation in the Seventh
Asian Games which will take
place from Sept. 1 to 16.
While there is no fear,
there is a bit of apprehen-
sion concerning the safety of
the competitors, and the dele-
gation, consequently, will in-
clude a large number of se-
curity people. The total num-
ber in the Israeli party comes
to 91 people.
Yosef Inbar, president of
the Israeli Olympic Com-
mittee, and Haim Glovinsky,
executive secretary of the
committee, left for Teheran
last Friday in order to final-
ize all arrangements for the
entertainment of the Israeli
contingent.
It is interesting to note
that among the 26 countries
involved in the games will
be four Arab states: Kuwait,
Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Bah-
rein. Shmuel Lalkin, chief
d'mission for the Israelis,
who was in Teheran a week
ago, indicated, "I do not

know if the Arabs will com-
pete against us, but Israeli
sportsmen will not withdraw
from any event because
Arab athletes are lined up
against them."
Lalkin indicated that the
facilities for the games are
among the finest in the world,
and the central stadium will
seat 100,000 spectators. Built
at a phenomenal expense, the
indoor stadiums and swim-
ming pools are air condi-
tioned.
The top woman athlete in
the nation, Esther Shacha-
morov-Roth, who performed
outstandingly at Munich
prior to the massacre of the
Israeli athletes at the Olym-
pic Games, has not regained
her Olympic Games form as
yet, but is expected to have
a chance to cop a medal
in the hurdles.
Possibly the most likely
female candidate for a gold
medal is Israel's 17-year-old
Orit Abramowitz, who jumps
a la Fosbury going over the
barrier with back to the
timber.

JERUSALEM — Ten parts
of beauty descended on the
world; nine parts were given
to Jerusalem, one to the rest
of the world. So reads a say-
ing in the Talmud. It has
also inspired the revival of
a scrapbook review being
presented in English at the
Khan theater nightclub here.
The interior of the Kahn,
with its n a t u r a 1 cave-like
walls and seats which sur-
round the stage on t h r e e
sides, with giant columned
arches in between, provide a
unique setting. The produc-
tion uses a bare stage.
The cast of five retells the
history of Jerusalem from
Solomon to today including
familiar expressions of ex-
ternal longings for the city.
Apart from the lyrics, all
the material is authentic and
includes excerpts from Shai
Agnon, Herzl's diaries, offi-
cial British documents, the
local press, radio, newsreels
and contemporary books. All
of these are presented
through songs, dramtic
sketches, comedy items and
dance numbers. In some
cases the traditional melodies
have been given a modern
setting.
One humorous sketch de-
picts Theodor Herzl's visit to
Jerusalem whereupon being
so pleased to see Jewish
porters transporting his trunk
to his room, he asked them
to return so he could have
their picture taken to show
to people.
A dirty and disheveled
soldier relates his lack of
feelings at the recapture of
the Old City after the Six-Day
War; and the many familiar
characters, the variety of
hats worn by the many who
walk the streets of the shuk
(market) forms the theme of
another scene.
The original show, called
Yerushalayim Sheli (My Je-
rusalem) was written and
compiled in 1968 by the Is-
ralei lyricist and writer, Dan
Almagor.

In April the management
of the Khan asked Reuven
Morgan, an immigrant from
Cardiff, Wales in 1959, to
take on the new production.
Reuven who has been writ-
ing, translating, directing
and producing theater (in-
cluding Habima productions),
radio shows and television
documentaries, translated
about 40 per cent of the old
material into English, wrote
about 10 per cent new and
adapted the rest.
The four-piece orchestra is
under the musical direction
of Yossi Bar-Haim, an Is-
raeli composer and arranger
who has studies in both Is-
rael and the United States.
Bar-Haim was also the band
leader in the original 1968
production.
Rina Sharett, an Israeli
who specializes in folklore
and traditional dance, did the
choreography. Ms. Sharett
has traveled and s t u d i e d
widely, has choreographed
for Inbal and teaches at the
Wingate Institute for Physi-
cal Culture.
The s h o w is performed
once a week at the Khan
with plans to perform in Tel
Aviv. In the fall, the group
hopes to make a color tele-
vision feature of the show
for release abroad.

Road Safety Days
Declared by Rabbis

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The chief rabbinate has de-
clared the 40-day period
from the first of Elul till
Yom Kippur, road safety
days, "in view of the terrible
slaughter on the roads."
The rabbis called for an
"awakening" among drivers
and pedestrians to the rules
of the road during the period
when every Jew is meant to
account for his deeds and
those of his people.
