Beth Achim. Mrs. Sperak came to De- troit in 1925 and attended the City College of Detroit (now Wayne State Univer- sity). She was married in 1931 to Rabbi Sperka who was the spiritual, leader at Cong. Bnai David, in addition to pulpits in Ann Arbor and Mt. Clemens and presently holds the pulpit at Young Israel of Greenfield. She is a founder of Bnai David Sisterhood; women's division, American Jewish Congress in 1939; Fannie G l u c k Chapter, Mizrachi Women, and a life member of that group. She was awarded the "Woman of Valor" award in 1964 by Miz- rachi Women. She also was the founder of the Women's Sabbath League. She has been active in the women's division of State of Local Author Has Two New Books Detroiter Rhoda Zahavie Shames, who has already published several books of poems and short stories, has authored two new books. The first, "Pulse of the Mortal Clock," is a poetic work which is the result of SO years of writing. It will be released by Ahva Press in Jerusalem. At age 7, Miss Raim was sponsored by the Music Study Club and was taken on as a student by Mischa Kottler. She won awards throughout the state and appeared as a soloist in concerts with the Detroit Symphony Or- chestra's Young People's Symphony, the Windsor Sym- phony and Toledo Symphony orchestras. Following her acceptance at Curtis Institute, where she is studying under Mieczslaw Horszowski and Rudolph, Serkin, Miss Raim was pre- sented as one of the featured artists at one of the club's annual artist's concerts. She has since made her debut at the National Gal- lery of Art in Washington, D.C., received second prize in the B a c h International Competition and earned the first Festorazzi A w a rd at Curtis Institute.
