U.S• Professor Reports Drop
in Western Support for Israel
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Pub-
lic support for Israel in the
western world is leveling to
its pre-October 1973 height
following an upsurge during
and immediately following
the Yom Kippur War.
This is the main finding
of a study of public opinion
polls undertaken for the for-
eign ministry, by visiting
Prof. Percy H. Tannenbaum
of the U.S. at the Hebrew
University's Institute of Com-
munications.
A MASTERPIE
NOTHING SHORT OF A MASTERPIECE! STUNNING! SLEEPER HIT OF
THE YEAR! IT HAS TEN TIMES THE ENERGY OF MOST CONTEMPORARY
FILMS! Director Ted Kotcheff has captured with a ferocity of movement and
sharp detail every aspect of Mordecai Richter's writing, creating a MODERN
SCREEN CLASSIC!"
—Rex Reed, N.Y. Daily News
"FUNNY, FANTASTIC
AND OFTEN MOVING!
FRANTIC PACE!
There's not a bad per-
formance in the film.
An alternately sad and
hilarious movie of
dreams rampant!'
—Vincent Canby,
New York Times
"A STUNNING

ANCE BY RICHARD
DREYFUSS, that has
the same freshness,
invention and excite- -
ment that characterized
Dustin Hoffman's arrival
in 'The Graduate'!"
—Paul D. Zimmerman,
Newsweek
"A STUNNING SAGA!
The entire cast is
splendid. Duddy is a
swine, but the film is
fine!"

—Pauline Kael
"PURELY PERFECT!
Old-fashioned—the way
an Elgin watch is old-
fashioned: intricately
designed, beautifully
crafted, pleasing to the
eye, and, above all, it
tells the time. This is the
kind of picture I wish I
could write about for
days!" —Liz Smith,
Cosmopolitan

Tannenbaum is professor
of public policy and psycho-
logy at -the University of
California at Berkeley.
His survey embraced more
than 50 polls conducted in a
dozen western countries. It
showed a "hard core" of pro-
Israel support
averaging
around one-third of the pop-
ulation (though in Mediter-
ranean countries: Spain, It-
lay and France it is much
lower) and a pro-Arab hard
core of between five and 10
per cent.
During times of crisis—
the Six-Day War or the Yom
Kippur War—a "swinging
vote" of some five to 10 per
cent on the average tends to
rally to Israel's support, the
survey finds. But when the
crisis passes, this support
subsides again into "neu-
trals" and "don't knows."
Arab support remains pret-
ty constant in most countries,
though Prof. Tannenbaum
found a rise in pro-Arab sym-
pathy in recent months in
West Germany. There, while
eight per cent supported the
Arabs after the October war,
13 per cent do so today.
