Marriage: Its Customs and Traditions
By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
nify the blessing given to the
Patriarch, Abraham, i.e.,
that his children would be as
plentiful as the stars in the
heavens above. (Genesis).
This practice would thus fall
in line with a number of cus-
toms that somehow appear
as a symbol of plentiful pro-
geny, for example, the cus-
tom of throwing nuts at the
grocm when he was called
before the Torah before his
wedding.
The intent is to have the
Some Jews insist upon
having the marriage cere- ceremony performed under
mony performed in the open the stars. This is desired so
that the stars above will sig-

Some texts prescribe the
age of 18 as the right age for
marriage (i.e. Aboth 5:24).
Some trace this number to
technical derivations from
words in the Bible. For ex-
ample, there are those who
claim that this number is
based (in the fact that
Adam's name is mentioned a
total of 18 times in the
Bible until he finally consum-
mates his marriage with Eve.
Others state that the numeri-
cal value of the Hebrew word
•that, constitutes the, expres-
sion "And He" which is used
in the Biblical phrase "And
he shall take a wife, etc."
(Leviticus 21:13) and, in the
same expression "And he,"
which begins the phrase in
the Psalms "And he is a
bridegroom," (Psalms 19:6)
is the number eighteen.
There are those who claim
a practical basis for this
statement in the sense that
this seems to be a proper
biological age. Biologically, a
human being needs to give
full expression to his emo-
tional drives and marriage
makes this possible in both
a legitimate and dignified
way. The Talmud fears sinful
thoughts or acts would over-
take one who is not mar-
ried by the age of 20 (Kid-
dushin 29b).
Some insist that the wed-
ding feast\ take place only at
night.
They claim the wedding
of Isaac and Rebecca as the
example. Eliezer, Abraham's
servant, arrived back home
with the intended bride, Re-
becca, towards evening and
the wedding was thus not
consumated until evening.
There might also be a prac-
tical consideration. It is eas-
ier to assemble guests in the
evening because people us-
ually are working or doing
house chores during the day.
Marriage, being a social
event for the community,
was therefore preferred at
night.

Promote Mall Event
Artist's Work Shown
The New Orleans Mall mer-
chants sent a big thank you
to The Jewish News this
week for its role in helping
to promote the mall's Mid-
night Madness sale Aug. 9:
According to Mrs. Marilyn
Hornfeld, representative of
Byron Trerice Co., real es-
tate agent for the mall, the
sale was a huge success.
Cars filled up the shopping
centers parking lot and some
of the neighboring streets.
The response was so over-
whelming, that merchants
had to restock merchandise
and reorganize their help
every 45 minutes, Mrs. Horn-
feld said.
The New Orleans Mall,
with 13 stores and services,
is located at 10 Mile and
Greenfield Rds., in South-
field.
