SUE KUTINSKY S 626-7312 — 3 Editor, The Jewish News, On Aug. 8 I listened to the Jewish radio hour conducted by Jules and Mary Abrams (four months after com- memoration date) and with shock I heard this story: the Polish underground smuggled in arms to prepare the War- saw Ghetto Uprising and that the Polish youth went to the ghetto to participate in the fighting. I myself was born in Poland. , I am familiar with the animalistic anti-Semitism of the Poles. But in this case I will use as witness the sur- viving heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto. In the book published by Wladki "From Both Sides of the Ghetto Wall," Wladki, herself a courier in the War- saw Ghetto Uprising, says (on pages 114-115), "The Germans would not be able to apprehend that many Jews New Pack Niblet Whole Kernel Bonita Fillets (skinless & boneless) 4%-oz. About the problem of arms she says "We smuggled arms from the Aryan side for which we paid a very high price. This was in a time when the Polish underground had warehouses with all kinds of arms." These same things are described in the books of Johnas Turkov and Jacob Celemenski. There were Polish people risking their lives to save Jews. But how many were there? Less than a fraction of one per cent. The truth is the heroic fighters of the Warsaw Ghetto met with in- difference on the part of the gentile world and when the ghetto was in flames, the Poles on the other side of the wall were happily making jokes about the Jewish "bed bugs burning." I don't write this of hate to the Polish people. I don't feel that toward any people, but for history's sake I want the truth to be preserved. Consequently, the period being researched and documented covers the period 1790 to the present. - Rabbi Plaut said that sift- ing through early property assessments, telephone di- rectories, city directories and newspapers indicate a num- ber of Jews arriving in Wind- sor in the period 1880-1900. Many of these names are only assumed to be Jews, in that no trace other than their names can be found to sub- stantiate their religion at this time. He added that the nu- cleus of the present day com- munity formed at that time. Many of the Jews who lived briefly in Windsor in that period moved to Detroit, and descendants still live in the city today. Rabbi Plaut is seeking relatives of Jacob Topkin , Samuel Abramson, Rabbi Ashinsky or Ashlus- key, a Belle River farmer named Lebetsky, Jacob Lu- bitskey, Isaac Rappenport, Israel Rosen, Max Rosin, Jacob Solomon and Meyer Wartelsky. Also being sought are people with knowledge of Rev. Louis Hirsch, Rabbi Wolinsky and Abraham or Joseph Stein. Anyone with knowledge or materials relating to the 1880-1900 period are asked to write Rabbi Plaut, 2525 Mark, Windsor, Ont., or call him at 519-969-2422.
