THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 34—Friday, August 9, 1974 Mobilize for Balfour Conceri LETTER BOX Reader Urges Eye Donations Editor, The Jewish News: There are over 275 people in Michigan that are blind or are progressively going blind. The sad fact about this is that these people can regain 100 per cent of their sight. I hope to impress people with the need, the importance, the meaning and the knowhow in donating one's eyes or someone's close to them (hus- band's, son's, daughter's etc.). I have been legally blind for 31/2 years and have been waiting for 20 months—more than 1 1/2 years — for a call from the ophthalmologist say- ing he has received a donor eye suitable for a corneal transplant: the grafting of ANTIQUE SALE & SHOW SUNDAY, AUGUST 11 10 A.M to 6 P.M. Does removal of the eyes mar the appearance of the body? No. Removal of eyes is carefully done. Eyes for transplants have to be removed within two to four hours after death. They are good for corneal trans- plants for approximately 24 to 48 hours. In the event a patient is not available with- in the time limit needed to use fresh tissue, the eyes are shipped to eye-banks to allow for redistribution elsewhere. It takes an enormous amount of sagacity and cour- age to comprehend the re- sulting good of donating eyes at death at a time when most people fall into shock or des- pair. I cannot help but think how the 22-year-old donor of a transplant of mine felt. I was told he was suffering from multiple sclerosis and wasn't expected to live to be a teen-ager; and yet when he entered the hosptital for the last time he knew he might be helping a blind person to have the one thing he never had — knormal healthy life.
