BINGO CONGREGATION BETH ACHIM 21100 W. 12 MILE SOUTHFIELD WED., 7:30 P.M. NEW YORK — Faced with a drop-out rate of 70 per cent of post Bar and Bat Mitzva students, Temple Beth El of Great Neck implemented .a program that encourages stu- dents to pursue Jewish edu- cation into their teens. The program, described in "Beth El Chavura Pro- gram," by Eric Feldheim, a publication of the Union of American Hebrew Congrega- tions Creative Education Series, operates on a checks and balances systeM involv- ing students, parents and faculty. The program, now in its fourth year was conceived when the cause of the high drop-out rate was discovered —the Jewish education pro- gram at the temple was not meeting the students' needs. To determine these needs, value seminars were set up and led by students in the higher grades and junior congregation. When the needs were determined, a second session involving all of the students was held and each student had the opportunity to voice his ideas. Faculty members were ap- praised of the students aims and objectives and set up a format for instruction. Each grade had an orientation session followed by recom- mendations from the stu- dents. The recommendations included eliminating exams and report cards, adjusting the dress code, taking more field trips and involving themselves in social action and service projects. Following discussions with parents, a committee of par- ents students, teachers, mem- bers of the Board of Jewish Education and the educa- tional director suggested an educational framework. With- in the framework of the pro- gram the following points were presented: That the student be the focus of concern, the pro- gram reflect the needs of its participants, the faculty be attuned to cooperative plan- ning, the parents be drawn into the educational process and adequate planning time be allotted for activities.' A major innovation of the chavura system is that each group has a leadership clus- ter made up of an adviser, a member of the junior temple club, two parents and mem- bers of the chavura. Each group is able to decide its own activities, planning is done by both the leadership and chavura with group leaders coming from the faculty.
