Methodist Leader Predicts 2nd Holocaust Due to Church Failure

NEW YORK—The Jewish
Academy of Arts and Sci-
ences has conferred member-
ship on Mrs. Edythe Lutz-
ker, noted medical science
researcher, and vice president
of the Waldemar Mordecai
Haffkine International Me-
morial Committee.

NEW YORK (JTA) — Dr.
Bernhard E. Olson, national
director of Interreligious Af-
fairs for the National Confer-
ence of Christians and Jews,
believes another holocaust is
possible, says the last holo-
caust pointed out the failure
of the church.
Dr. Olson expresses these
views in an interview sched-
uled for broadcast Tuesday
on New York's WEVD-radio
as part of the station's public
affairs 'programming.
The 64-year-old Methodist
minis t e r, considered the
country's foremost Christian
authority on Christian-Jewish
relations, is the author of the
monumental book, "Faith
and Prejudice," which ex-
posed and evaluated the
images and depictions of
other religious communities,
especially Jewish, that pupils
and teachers received from
Protestant church publica-
tions.
The book revealed that
Protestant churches were
teaching deadly forms of
prejudice and the work sub-
sequently forced a complete
re-evaluation of Protestant
Sunday school materials.

struggle and the Holocaust, a

works for the "advancement
of Jewish scholarship and for
distinction in the arts and sci-

elected to membership in the
Jewish Academy of Arts and

Dr. Olson said: "The Holo-

the Christian church. It was
a tragedy for the Jew, but
it was (also) a tragedy for
the church. It pointed out the
failure of the church."

Dr. Olson also expresses
belief that another holocaust
is possible, adding, "The
Jews in the Middle East are
afraid (that) another holo-

there."
Questioned as to whether
he was fearful that America
might opt for oil rather than
Israel, Dr. Olson replies:
"We may not opt for oil so
much as opting for other
things. But oil is a considera-
tion. I don't think we would
necessarily sell (out) Israel
for a barrel of oil, but we
might. I think there is a

AJCongress Calls for Higher
Standards in Nursing Homes

NEW YORK — Charging
"negligence" by the Depart-
ment of Health, Education
and Welfare, the American
Jewish Congress called for a
broadly based citizens' cam-
paign to demand higher
standards and stricter en-
forcement procedures aimed
at overcoming "the neglect
and abuse that characterize
nursing home care."
A 40-page AJCongress re-
port said that despite annual
federal expenditures of more
than $3,000,000,000 on insti-
tutional and other care for
the aged, "tens of thousands
of nursing home patients suf-
fer from indifferent treat-
ment and disregard of their
human needs.
The study criticized what it
called the "failure of the
Department of Health, Edu-
cation and Welfare and other
agencies to meet their re-
sponsibilities." As an ex-
ample the report said, it was
standard practice to give
nursing homes up to four
weeks' advance notice of in-
spection, thus providing "op-
portunity to hide . . . de-
ficiencies."
The study recommended
new regulations to permit un-
announced visits so inspec-
tors could evaluate homes
"under normal operating
conditions and thus . . pre-
pare more accurate reports."
The report also assailed the
refusal of HEW to prescribe
minimum ratios of staff to
patients, charging that this
policy amounted to "a license
permitting nursing homes to
engage in gross understaff-
ing."
The study limited itself to
"proprietary" (p r i v a t e,
profit-making) homes listed
as "skilled nursing facilities"
for the elderly who need in-
patient medical care on a
daily basis. Such "skilled
nursing facilities" receive
government funds through
Medicare and Medicaid and

buy articles which would
help soldiers overcome the
boredom of hospital life.
These included games, cas-
sette recorders and transistor
radios. Eight huge gift par-
cels were sent free of charge
to the Israel Embassy here
by a Trier forwarding agent.
